The author would like to share some observations about where people see healthcare heading -- likely scenarios that will bring new management challenges and opportunities for all in the months and years ahead. While these six "predictions" represent only some of the forces at work in healthcare today, he believes they will drive fundamental changes in how providers are selected; how assets are managed; how care delivery is structured; how facilites are designed; how employees are motivated; and how leaders lead. These are: 1. Quality-and-performance reporting will shift from value-add to essential. 2. Asset rightsizing will provide new levers to fund strategic growth. 3. Departmental autonomy will fade as technology enables enterprise view. 4. 'Care architecture' will drive smarter facility design. 5. Effective leaders will be part policymaker, part entrepreneur. 6. Managing clinical staff will require new thinking -- and methods.
