The challenge of global warming to business enterprises
Global warming is a problem that arose in the last decade and it is getting more and more
serious concern as the time goes by. Global warming is one of the biggest issues of our time, which
either already hampers or is going to hamper businesses in the very near future.
Businesses have incentive to cope with the problem of global warming since it causes direct
damages to them. An example of the damages that global warming might cause to businesses was
given in the movie – the permafrost on which buildings and pipelines are constructed. As a result of
the unstable ground over which the constructions took place a business can bear serious losses – direct
losses like inventory (in the case of the pipeline), and indirect like failing to meet its obligations to a
client (unstable construction) as a result of which top business executives can be hold liable.
But it is also a problem that concerns the long term interests of businesses. Short-term results
are undermining issues such as the long-term sustainability of profits, how a company relates to the
community and its employees, and the environment. It is an issue that should provoke modern
business people to think of alternative methods for decreasing the destructive and demolishing
consequences of global warming.
Global warming is becoming one of the greatest threads of our time. As Al Gore mentioned in
the movie there are great advantages of the scientific and technological revolution for society. But the
power that businesses have got as a result of those discoveries brings great responsibility. Moreover
businesses have incentive to cope with the problem especially in the long term so putting their efforts
to solve it will be beneficial for them as well as for the community as a whole.
