CASE STUDY OF SUCCESS You will conduct research using social science research methods, to determine how an adult in your community has succeeded in achieving a goal. 1. Select a successful individual who you are interested in studying. This individual will be the subject of your research: (e.g. an athlete, a business owner, a public figure, a teacher, etc…) ___________________________________________________________________________ 2. Now ask a specific research question about the achievement of goals. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ 3. Design an interview consisting of a few open-ended questions that will get the data needed to answer the research question. Include questions about long-term goals and short-term goals, ensuring goals are SMART, and overcoming obstacles. *(Attach your questions to this page for submission. Your questions must be approved by your teacher before moving on to the next step.) 4. Arrange a time when you can meet or talk to (over the phone, e-mail) the subject of your study. Plan how you will record your answers before you conduct the interview. *(Your parents and/or guardians must be aware of your plans and must sing the permission form attached before you continue with your interview). 5. Organize your data so that you can compare, summarize, and analyse the data. 6. Compare your data to what you have learned about setting and achieving goals. 7. Write a brief, three-paragraph case study about your subject in which you describe how the subject of your interview succeeded. Include in your report: Introduction of subject and her/his goal Method (how you gathered your data) Evidence from your interview Your comparison with what you have learned in class Conclusion (how the individual’s success story can help others) Add an interesting title to your report LEVEL 4 LEVEL 3 LEVEL 2 LEVEL 1 Knowledge / You have fully described You have mostly You have somewhat described You have limitedly described Understanding how an individual achieved described how an how an individual achieved a how an individual achieved a a personal goal. individual achieved a personal goal. personal goal. /20 personal goal.
