Up until about 40 years ago, career decision making supposed that all an individual had to do to insure a satisfying career was to take a test or two, see what the ideal career was for you, obtain the appropriate training, get the job and live happily ever after. While the need for career development assistance was rapidly growing, the number of qualified and credentialed career counselors was shrinking. In order to meet the growing need for career practitioners, the new specialties of Career Development Facilitator (CDF) and Career Coach emerged. While there is no mandatory licensing for career coaches, the credentialing process, while discretionary, can be an important indicator of a career practitioner's competency.
