The goal of this paper is to provide information, tools and resources to facilitate the exploration and teaching of issues of mental health and their impact in career selection, planning, implementation, and maintenance. Employed Americans spent more time at work (8.7 hour) than at any other activity, including sleeping (7.6 hour). Depression affects approximately 5.4% of persons 12 years of age and older in any 2-week period in the US. The pervasive problems of unemployment and underemployment of persons with disabilities represents a call to action for career counselors. Mental health problems are responsible for higher rates of absenteeism, staff turnover and lower productivity, creating considerable direct and indirect costs. Career and mental health are interrelated. It is becoming increasingly clearer that the social role in which most people spend eight or more hours daily has an effect on their mental health and well being, and vice versa.
