[...] while these essays show that the idea of the South has long been manufactured and marketed and is, at its heart, historically contingent, we should also remember that the modern tourism industry, in particular, and consumer capitalism, in general, has too often had a uniquely disastrous effect on the local cultures, customs, and health of the region and its people, from the demise of historically African American coastal communities at the hands of resort developers, to the replacement of locally grown foods and local food traditions with fast food chains and preprocessed foods.
