The UK government's Excellence in Cities program includes 105 city learning centers. They are often attached to one particular school, but service others in the area, providing state of the art information and communications technology-based learning opportunities to school pupils and the wider community. The total running budget of L23.1 million a year is modest in relation to the total schools budget, but it is a significant sum for the e-learning industry. An important element of the learning centers is the cross-curricular nature of the teaching. Rather than dealing with ICT in isolation, the aim is to run a project on a topic area involving several different subject areas and using ICT as part of the project.
