Informal learning has became a big subject, with much discussion as to how to get the best out of it and bring it to the forefront of overall training provision within an organization. But this could be counter-productive because, as far as anyone knows, it only succeeds because no-one is thinking about it. You could say it is all learning that is not formal training, the latter being instructor-led, coaching, mentoring, distance learning and all the other platforms that are in common use today. Many of the incredibly successful Web-based social networking sites are cases in point. Some learning interventions are successful because they are carefully planned and designed to deliver knowledge, information or skills that change behaviors or improve performance of the individual, team or organization overall.
