Last fall, Julio M. Ottino, Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Northwestern Univ., and John Guckenheimer from the Mathematics Dept. at Cornell Univ., organized a National Science Foundation (NSF) workshop entitled "Foundations for Complex Systems Research in the Physical Sciences and Engineering." At the two-day workshop, a panel of researchers from various areas of specialization was charged with identifying barriers and gaps that impede complexsystems research.
