The writer must have a keen ear and the ability to individuate each speaker - to go past the boundaries of beautiful expository writing and deliver to the reader each character in his or her own language, wholly natural and revealed. Employing two narrators in his new novel, The Secret Scripture, the Irish playwright Sebastian Barry is able to convince us of two distinct characters, each with their own ways of speaking and looking at the world - but only up to a point.
