In Lincoln's world of the developing theater and newspaper cartoons, Harold Holzer, one of the nation's most knowledgeable scholars on Lincoln, devotes only half a sentence to the humor of the cartoon and caricature that Lincoln was subjected to: "Lincoln would become a familiar, often grotesquely lampooned, figure in political cartoons that took pictorial disrespect one step further" (175).
