Description: The majestic yet reticent solemnity of Nono and the expressionistic conclusions drawn from that solemnity by, in particular, Lachenmann, would appear to have had a stronger hold on German musical sensibilities since 1989, and a composer with as historically conflicted a relation to tradition as Wolfgang Rihm could well have found the deadpan eloquence of Kagel's Sankt-BachPassion (1985) rather too polished for comfort: it is certainly very different in tone from die kind of evocations of The German Past to be found in mainstream German music from Henze to Pintscher.
