National Guard units from each affected state responded almost immediately, distributing food, knocking down dangerously heavy ice from tree limbs, cutting away downed trees and conducting vital checks on remote residents, saving lives in some cases. The Kentucky Guard provided myriad services to the commonwealth, including communications support, engineering capability, power generation, security and aviation-recovery missions, in addition to distributing food and water.
