During this troubling economic time, healthcare executives and educators' challenge is recognizing its implications for their own work and actions. As healthcare leaders and educators it is more important than ever that they think clearly and act decisively for better health, better care and better learning on the path forward. They can start with the following five strategies: 1. Focus on the basics. 2. Reduce waste and add value in clinical care. 3. Seek and use good science. 4. Enable continual change. 5. Build community. Now that they have these strategies in mind, they also must figure out how to best prepare tomorrow's healthcare work force. Today 48 schools are working to change undergraduate learning to help health professionals develop the knowledge and skills necessary to confront future challenges. The greatest contributions healthcare leaders and governing boards can make to a better future are to support the integration of these new professional education approaches.
