2004 Survey Data Added to Community Health Data Base, Expanding Capacity for Trend Analysis Across All Topic Areas Available Now at Temple’s Social Science Data Library The Office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies is pleased to announce that data from the 2004 Southeastern Pennsylvania Household Survey is now available through the Community Health Data Base (CHDB) to all Temple students, faculty, and staff. Along with data from the 1998, 2000, and 2002 surveys, this additional data set expands the potential for conducting conduct trend analysis across a multitude of health and community related topic areas. CHDB is unique in the nation, and Temple was the first academic subscriber. Tbe CHDB is being used across Temple in development of grant applications, student projects, and research. It’s also being used in curriculum in at least two colleges, allowing students to gain experience working with large data sets. We strongly encourage you to look into how these data can support your work here at Temple. The CHDB is managed here at Temple by the Social Science Data Library. SSDL staff provides specific information about how to access these data. SSDL is open Monday through Friday from 9 – 5 and can be contacted via phone at 1-5001/2, or email at ssdl@temple.edu. To promote and facilitate use of the CHDB by the largest possible number of Temple faculty, staff, and students, the data can be accessed through SSDL in more than one way; users can use raw data, with files available in SAS, SPSS, and DBF format, or go to the CHDB web site, using a password protected data analysis tool that gives access to selected data for custom geographic areas As background, the CHDB is based on the Southeastern Pennsylvania Household Health Survey, a telephone survey of over 10,000 households conducted every two years. It affords subscribers the opportunity to conduct small-area analysis over a wide range of health and community related areas, including health status, access to health care, service use, health-related behavior, and social capital. All CHDB data can be analyzed by geographic, social, and demographic criteria. Information can be developed by neighborhoods, census tracts, ZIP codes, health districts, municipalities, counties, and the region as a whole. This information can be demographically targeted (i.e. ethnic and racial groups, women/men, older adults, TANF recipients, uninsured, children, any age group, etc). In addition to the household survey data, the CHDB subscription includes a user friendly tool to access U.S. Census data, vital statistics (births/deaths), mortgage data, and property data. Major topic areas of the 2004 household survey include: health status, source of care and utilization of services, satisfaction with care, health insurance, obstacles to care, personal health behaviors, disease prevention and health promotion, doctor-patient relations, mental health, social capital, safety and violence, hunger, health information, child care and youth employment, supplemental questions for elderly, and demographic characteristics.
