CRIME AND INTELLIGENCE ANALYSIS (CIA)
THE PROGRAM
The Certificate in Crime and Intelligence Analysis (CIA) is offered in cooperation with the state of California Department of Justice, the Certificate in Crime and Intelligence Analysis is designed for in-service law enforcement personnel and pre-service students. Courses focus on the analysis of crimes that most frequently come to the attention of field and investigative officers and those of interest to intelligence officers.
TO ENROLL IN THE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
An application must be filed along with a nonrefundable application fee of $50. Courses taken prior to application apply to the certificate, but your completion requirements are those in effect when you apply. The nonrefundable fee covers academic advisement, tracking of progress/completion, and updates on program changes and additions. Certificate application forms are available in Extension’s quarterly catalog, at Student Services, in program department offices and on the Web site at www.extension.ucr.edu/certificates.
OBJECTIVES
Participants will: • Analyze crime and use law enforcement data to forecast when and where criminals are likely to strike. • Detect and understand distinctions among crime patterns. • Use crime and intelligence information to create directed patrol or tactical action plans that lead to an effective response. • Collect data, subject it to statistical tests, develop and test hypotheses, and write conclusions of findings in a manner that adheres to commonly accepted criminal justice research standards.
SCHEDULING OF CLASSES
This program is typically completed in 12-18 months. Generally, each course has five meetings on two weekends: Friday, Saturday and Sunday meetings followed by Saturday and Sunday meetings two or three weeks later.
ADMISSION
The program and courses are open to anyone who can benefit from university-level study, including persons who are not certificate candidates but who are interested in specific topics. Some prerequisites may apply.
TRANSFER CREDIT
Comparable courses from other accredited institutions providing the required courses for the Certificate in Crime and Intelligence Analysis may be transferred into this program. A minimum of 16 units must be earned at UCR Extension. Official transcripts are required.

COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS
To earn the certificate, students must complete (grade C or better) seven required courses for a total of 26 units and a 400-hour supervised practicum with the crime analysis unit of a law enforcement agency. The candidate must also demonstrate knowledge of computer application. Usual completion time is 12-18 months. 5. How much does it cost to complete the program? The cost of the CIA Certificate Program is estimated at about $4100-$4300. This includes textbooks, parking and materials. This price is subject to change. 6. Do you offer online courses? All courses are offered at the UCR Extension Center. Some courses may have an online component. 7. Do you provide job placement after I graduate? FAQS
1. I am interested in taking only one or two courses. Do I have to enroll in the entire certificate program or are courses available for individual enrollment? All courses are open for individual enrollment. Students may take the entire program or choose to select individual courses on topics most beneficial to them. 2. What are the prerequisites? There are no prerequisites for enrolling in the CIA Certificate program. 3. Do I need to apply for admission to the University? No, the University Extension provides professional and continuing education to the community. You do not need to be a matriculated student at UC Riverside to attend classes at the Extension. However you must file an Extension’s certificate program application form available on the web or in our quarterly catalog. 4. Do I need a college degree to enroll in this program or to get a job? You do not need a degree to enroll. A college degree may be required for employment by some agencies. You are advised to check with your agency of choice to determine minimum eligibility requirements for particular jobs. Our CIA Certificate Program provides the specialized technical training used on the job, but does not replace a college degree.
