LORRAINE FEATHER
Lyricist/singer Lorraine Feather’s work has been heard on numerous records, in films and on television. Her songs have been covered extensively by adult contemporary and jazz artists, including Phyllis Hyman, Kenny Rankin, Patti Austin, Diane Schuur and Cleo Laine. Her own CDs have received glowing reviews in every major jazz magazine. Her 2004 release, Such Sweet Thunder—Music of the Duke Ellington Orchestra (Sanctuary/BMG), featured contemporary lyrics to formerly instrumental pieces written by Duke Ellington, and was called “pure genius” by Jazz Times. Her 2005 album, Dooji Wooji, contained several Ellington pieces with her added lyrics as well as songs written with Eddie Arkin, Shelly Berg and Russell Ferrante (of the Grammy-winning group Yellowjackets). Her new release, Language, will be out in late 2007. Lorraine began working in television as a lyricist in 1992 and has received seven Emmy nominations. Her lyrics for children include the Disney’s Dinosaurs series on ABC and the MGM films Babes In Toyland and An All Dogs Christmas; Lorraine and composer Mark Watters wrote the themes for MGM’s TV shows All Dogs Go To Heaven and The Lionhearts; they also created the piece “Faster, Higher, Stronger” for Jessye Norman to sing in the opening ceremonies of the 1996 Olympics. In 2003, Lorraine and Australian composer Paul Grabowsky wrote the songs for Disney’s feature film the Jungle Book 2. In 2004, Lorraine and composer Larry Grossman were asked to hand-tool a song for Julie Andrews to sing in The Princess Diaries 2. This marked the first onscreen singing performance by Ms.Andrews in many years, and was hailed by numerous publications as being the highlight of the film. The Princess Diaries 2 also spawned a gold record. Lorraine has also provided lyrics for Disney’s Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween, the PBS series Make Way for Noddy, and the Candy Land and the My Little Pony films for Hasbro Toys. Since 2005, Lorraine has been working as lyricist on Canum Entertainment’s theatrical project The Thief, based on the Oscar-nominated Russian film and featuring the music of Russian composer Vladimir Shainskiy; in late 2006 Canum obtained the rights to do a musical stage production of Elia Kazan’s classic 1957 movie A Face in the Crowd, and signed Lorraine on to do the lyrics for this project as well. She is also working as the librettist for an opera of Tom Wolfe’s The Bonfire of the Vanities (music by New York composer Stefania de Kenessey). American Opera Projects presented excerpts from this work in New York in June of 2006. Lorraine was born in Manhattan. Her father was jazz writer Leonard Feather; her mother Jane was a former big band singer and ex-roommate of Peggy Lee, and Lorraine’s godmother was Billie Holiday.
