LESSON PLAN Class: Grade 7: Language Arts Date: Thursday, July 17, 2008 Period: 4 & 5 (1 hour 30 minutes) Teacher: Amanda Kushin Unit: Superheroes and Short Stories: “What Makes a Superhero?” Curriculum Planning: Topic(s)/ Goal(s) 1. Students will learn about what details must be incorporated into their superheroes 2. Students will draw their superheroes (including an emblem-which will be discussed) Learning Objectives/Questions 1. Students will use their previous knowledge of character traits/descriptions (discussed in class last week) and create their very own superhero 2. Students will learn about emblems and make up their own emblem for their superhero. 3. Students will review superhero traits and “snapshot” words. 4. Students will discuss the problems that superheroes might face in a story. 5. Students will draw and describe the traits and descriptions of their superhero. 6. a. strand: Writing b. technology standards (NETS*S): . UDL components:     Guided questions for self-monitoring Representations of progress (e.g. before and after photos, graphs and charts showing progress over time) Templates that guide self-reflection on quality and completeness Differentiated models of self-assessment strategies Instructional planning: Invitation to learn / Anticipatory Set (+Options)  Assessment planning: Evidence of readiness:    Review character traits using overhead Review snapshot words using the “One of these things is not like the other” worksheet Prerequisites: o Knowledge of how to use SmartBoard (will have to come up to the SmartBoard and circle things) o Knowledge of how to use Clickers Apply knowledge of character traits, descriptions in designing their own super hero Review character traits and snapshot words  Information / Instruction (+Options)   Check for:   Students fill-in their daily planner (This will include writing down their homeworkPass out grade reports:bring back grade signed by a parent/guardian (grade reports are given out every Friday and require a parent signature/handed in every Monday) and 100 minutes read in their reading log with a signature Review superhero traits/powers (Look at the list and add some more using the document camera) Student vote on which traits are the most descriptive by using the Clickers (The favorite top three traits are then discussed and talked about why they are the best traits) Use the “One of these things is not like the other” worksheetusing all of the things we learned about “snapshots” and “painting” will pass out as a worksheet and then go over it as a class once everyone has completed it (See attached worksheet) using the SmartBoard Have students comes up to the SmartBoard to circle the correct answer (interactive answering) What is an emblem? (Using the SmartBoard to explain/view/make interactive with pictures of the emblems) (See attached) What types of problems can superheroes be faced withwrite ideas on the SmartBoard/share ideas aloud What’s in a name? Choosing a superhero name  write ideas on the Smartboard (after groups sitting at tables come up with their top How will you know they comprehend? :  open discussion  open questions to the class  continually engage and get student feedback and response  Learning from each other in groups/individual response      3 favorite) Pass out worksheet that acts as a superhero planning sheet (students will also need colored pencils/markers/crayons) Guided Practice/ Experience (+Options)  Group work: coming up with ideas about the problems a superhero might face in a story  Group work: deciding which words are not “snapshot” words Independent Performance/Assignment (+Options)  Worksheet (see attached) that lists all of the necessary information that must be included about the superhero Closure  Review: Go around the room and ask students to share what they have done so far with their superheroes  Monitor for: I will be able to gauge how successful the lesson was by the quality of your student's analysis that they are turning in as well as how they present their reasoning through the questioning/discussion time Assess for:  If the students are following directions and filling in all of the necessary information for their superheroes Consider:  How long each task will take (keep an eye on time)-Balance  How does technology enhance the lesson?  by making it more interactive and visual for all learners. This lesson becomes more cooperative through the use of a document camera, Clickers, and SmartBoard.  TAG students: Have them go beyond the requirements on the designing the superhero worksheet (must answer each question with 3-4 sentences)  Special Needs Students: give worksheets out that have examples already written in or circled as reference Resource Preparation: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Markers/colored pencils for all students Document Camera All of the attached worksheets (for either overhead use or individual worksheets) Clickers SmartBoard Management Concerns:    Keeping students engaged in class Keep up with open discussion Keep everyone on task Professional Reflection:  Organization/Prompt with moving into each activity/show confidence and knowledge EXTRA! Let’s review superhero traits/powers (Look at the list and add some more!) 2. One of these things is not like the other (using all of the things we learned about “snapshots” and “painting”) 3. What is an emblem? 4. What types of problems can superheroes be faced with (write ideas on the board/share ideas aloud) 5. What’s in a name? Choosing a superhero name! 6. Any other additional information about your superhero Make a sketch of your superhero to the best of your ability on the back of this paper. Every superhero has to have an emblem, so make a separate sketch (next to and on the superhero’s costume) of their emblem as well. The Nike swoosh is an emblem; it is often part of the entire logo of the company  Superhero emblems: Whose emblems are these?
