No “Float” with Check 21
The Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act, nicknamed Check 21, is a new Federal law that will speed up the check clearing process. Beginning October 28, 2004, a check's electronic image can be used to transfer money, rather than the original paper check. Since checks will be processed faster, it will be even more important to have the necessary funds in your account before you write a check. The “float” time you may have enjoyed in the past will no longer exist. For more information, please refer to the enclosed insert.

Your share savings in this Credit Union are insured up to $100,000 by NCUA, a U.S. Government Agency, and up to $250,000 by ASI, a private insurer, for a total up to $350,000... the highest combination of federal and private share insurance available.

Protecting Yourself from a "Ghost Terminal"
Ghost Terminals are showing up nationwide, and we want our members to be aware of the potential risk. Authorities say ghost terminals are a variation of the credit card “skimming” scam, and here's how it works: ➤ A fake touch pad screen is placed over a legitimate card reader and PIN pad on an ATM, using simple adhesive attachments such as two-sided foam tape. ➤ A fake card-dip reader is placed, usually to the right of the screen. These card readers look legitimate, but when used, they disable the legitimate ATMs on which they are placed. Because the machine is disabled and the card never physically enters the machine, no record of their usage is available for analysis, hence the term “Ghost Terminals.” ➤ Cardholders that use the ghost terminal receive error messages stating that the ATM is “out of service” after they have swiped their card. The information that is retrieved from their card along with the captured PIN, can then be used to create counterfeit cards. Be wary of using ATMs with temporary signage or an unfinished appearance. As much as possible, use the same series of ATMs consistently. If you receive an error message after using a suspicious ATM, please call us immediately.

Credit Union Volunteer Nominations
Service Plus CU's Nominating Committee has been appointed and is seeking interested members for the following positions: two 3-year Board of Director positions, and two 2-year Supervisory Committee positions. The committee is searching for members with a commitment toward the credit union as well as a basic knowledge of the credit union's services. Nominees should have the ability to use sound judgment, accept responsibility and make group decisions with fellow board or committee members. An essential requirement is the willingness to devote the necessary time and energy needed to equip oneself with the skills needed for the job. Enthusiasm and a positive attitude are very important, as is the belief in the purpose and future of credit unions. If you would like the opportunity to represent your peers in making important decisions about Service Plus CU's future, please call CEO Bernie Titus at (951) 680-1998, extension 101, for an application. All applications must be turned in by December 27, 2004 to: Nominating Committee Service Plus Credit Union P.O. Box 55317 Riverside, CA 92517-0317 Or, send email to email@servicepluscu.org. The voting, if needed, is conducted by mail ballot in April. The election results will be announced at the annual meeting on April 26, 2005. If there are no more candidates than openings, nominees will be appointed by general consent at the annual meeting. No ballots will be cast or nominations taken from the floor at the annual meeting.

My Credit Union Story
Dear Service Plus Credit Union, I've used the Credit Union's online service pretty much since you launched it, and have always found it "ahead of the curve." RCFCU (now Service Plus CU) had free internet banking early, introduced bill pay ahead of time, and made it free ahead of the curve. I find myself doing more and more of my banking at my desk -- especially since my work has had me moving around quite a bit during the last few years. When one's away on research or working for UC in Washington, it's especially convenient to be able to access my account and pay my bills online. The good service in person and on line has always been one of the Credit Union's strongest points. Thanks, Randy Head Service Plus Credit Union member since 1992 If Service Plus CU has helped you or made a difference in your life, please share your credit union story with us. Call 909-680-1998.106 or email it to shunke@servicepluscu.org.

Go Vote!
If you have not yet registered to vote in the November 2, 2004, election, you can pick up your voter registration cards in the Credit Union lobby or go online to http://www.ss.ca.gov/elections/votereg1.html.

Pardon Our Dust!
You may have noticed a little extra dust in our office due to our new lobby construction project. The result will be a more functional and accessible space to better accommodate you during your branch visit. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience during construction.
