Best Laid Plans: Free Lecture Series Recognizes Role of Luck in Career
Planning

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Vancouver, BC | Sept 24, 2008: It might seem like a contradiction for an
organization that offers career assessment, planning and counselling to offer a
lecture series focussing on the role that luck plays in our work lives, yet that is
precisely what the UBC Continuing Studies Life and Career Centre (LCC) is
doing in an upcoming series of free noon-hour presentations. “Making Your Own
Luck” takes place over four Tuesdays from October 7-28 at the UBC Robson
Square Theatre, and features four different takes on the theme of taking best
advantage of chance opportunities.

“Although setting goals for our career paths is as important as ever, the
inevitability of change is a simple fact of life in an era of economic instability and
rapid technological advancement,” explains LCC Managing Director, Sally
Halliday, “The ability to adapt to – and plan for – uncertainty has become an
essential skill for forging a successful and meaningful work life.”

Kicking off the series, author of The Physics of Living and UBC professor Dr.
Norm Amundson will share observations from own teaching, research and
writing, and highlight key aspects of planned happenstance theory. Other
presenters in the series, including former national TV journalist and news anchor
Kevin Evans, and aboriginal children's author and creative writing instructor
Richard Van Camp, will share their personal stories of creating new career paths
through embracing change and uncertainty.

The UBC Continuing Studies Life and Career Centre, located in downtown
Vancouver at UBC Robson Square, provides a variety of services for those
making personal or work transitions, including career and personality
assessments and follow up, free drop-in counselling, information and referrals to
community services. More information about the Life and Career Centre, and
about the “Making Your Own Luck” free noon-hour series, is available at
