The Shoals Welcomes National Alabama Corporation Company Announces It Will Build $350 Million Facility, Employ 1,800 The Shoals opened its arms on Wednesday, July 18, 2007, to welcome National Alabama Corporation, which announced that it will build a mile-long facility to manufacture railcars in the Barton Riverfront Industrial Park. In a public ceremony at the Marriott Shoals Conference Center, a large and enthusiastic crowd turned out to hear the great news. Loud and sustained applause followed when Alabama Governor Bob Riley asked The Shoals to welcome "our new neighbor" to the area. Greg Aziz, chairman and CEO of National Alabama Corporation, spoke highly of the efforts of Governor Riley and his economic development team to recruit the compa to Alabama. Mr. Aziz detailed the arduous site selection process that whittled the number of sites under consideration from 150 down to just two--one in The Shoals, the other in Mississippi. Ultimately, The Shoals a Alabama were selected as the new "sweet home" for the railcar company. "Of critical importance is a welcoming community of people who are motivated and want to become a significant partner with our organization," said Mr. Aziz. "Let me congratulate everyone involved at both the local and state levels. particularly would like to acknowledge the teams from the economic development offices and related agencies, who handled the myriad of details, delays, and decisions which are part of an effort of this magnitude. Governor Riley, a special thank you to you and the elected officials at the state and local levels who embraced our dream and created the climate where a winning situation for all was delivered. In the end, our decision was an easy one. We are proud to be bringing National Alabama to this sweet home." U.S. Congressman Bud Cramer spoke to the crowd about the magnitude of this announcement. He said, "I've been representing you for 18 years in the United States Congress. This is as good as it gets." He spoke of the efforts of not only the last year, but the past several years, as being critical to the cooperation needed to succeed in landing this project. Dr. David Bronner, CEO of the Retirement Systems of Alabama, also congratulated The Shoals for working togethe so well on this project. "The way you've worked together for this project is unique. You've done it." Local leaders from The Shoals also took the opportunity to address their friends and neighbors gathered on this historic day. Senator Bobby Denton spoke of the teamwork involved on this project and looked forward to The Shoals continuing "the roll that we've been on." He was followed by Dr. Humphrey Lee, chairman of the Shoals Chamber of Commerce, who spoke of the willingness of the community to "work together for a common goal." Finally, Macke Mauldin, chairman of the SEDA Board of Directors, took the opportunity to thank all of the state and local government officials and economic development professionals for working so hard to make this project a success. He said that "there is no limit" to what we can do if we work together. Truly, this was a big day for The Shoals. The entire community thanks everyone who had a share in working to brin this project to our area. We now look forward to working together with National Alabama Corporation to grow and see ever greater success in the years to come.
