As the Marketing Communications Coordinator, your primary role is being the custodian of the College
Brand and all external marketing communications activity. In fulfilling this role, you will help create
marketing communications plans and implement communication activities, track and analyze their
performance while ensuring that the overall branding and strategic objectives of the College are met.

The Coordinator will uphold the Marketing & Communications Department mission: “The stakeholders
we serve will receive top-notch marketing & communications strategy, fantastic creative that is consistent
with Red Deer College’s overall brand image and exceptional customer service.”

Team work is key to the success of this department. The incumbent will possess the skills necessary to
lead and motivate individuals to work cohesively in a team environment.


Reports to:               Associate Vice-President of Marketing & Communications

Subordinate Staff:        Marketing Consultant (2); Graphic Design Specialist (50%)

Internal contacts:        Red Deer College Departments, Faculty and Staff, Office of the President,
                          Includes Communications Consultant in Campaign Office, Leadership Team,
                          Board of Governors, Foundation Board of Directors, Students’ Association

External contacts:        Agency of Record; other designers, printers, photographers, suppliers &
                          vendors, other college and university communications and marketing staff.


1. Strategic Planning
   a) Participates in the development and implementation of campus-wide strategic communications
   b) Develops comprehensive brand & marketing communications strategies that support the overall
       strategic direction of the College
   c) Assess marketing communications programs, report findings and recommend improvements
   d) Provide expertise and share knowledge on creative direction and media purchases
   e) Provide expertise and share knowledge with internal clients on external communications

2. External Communications
   a) Lead the planning, development, creation and execution of brand and marketing initiatives
      campus-wide, including:
   b) Strategic Enrolment Management
   c) Arts, Trades & Manufacturing, Continuing Education, Health, Science, Business and Human
      Services, Learning Resources, Athletics, and Performing Arts
   d) Development, Alumni
   e) College Services
   f) Develop creative & content for both traditional & non-traditional marketing communications
      campaigns across integrated communications channels:
   g) Broadcast: radio, television
   h) Print: newspapers, magazines, brochures, catalogues, posters, program guides, folders; including
      Academic Calendar, Viewbook and Course Guide
   i) Out of Home: outdoor billboards, signage, bus kings
   j) Online: website, blogs, podcasts
   k) Develop plans that align with the College’s strategic plans and objectives and consider trends,
      research results
   l) As a marketing communications expert, be involved with Brand development, strategic planning
      and execution
   m) Research new programs and evaluate the success of current programs, making recommendations
      for change as necessary and appropriate including the direction of resources accordingly

3. Brand Management
   a) Implements the College’s brand long-term vision, and strategy
   b) Builds and maintains a consistent “look & feel” for all external messaging and creative
   c) Develops and maintains the College’s Brand Standards Guidelines and Logo management

4. Red Deer College Signage
   a) Oversees and manages the use of the external reader board as well as both the internal LCD
   b) Responsible for the management of advertising sales; creation & implementation of posting
      guidelines and usage
   c) Responsible for the profit/loss scenarios pertaining to the lease of the outdoor signage

5. Website
   a) Development and maintenance of an effective web presence that positions Red Deer College as a
      leader in post-secondary education and provide all target markets with up-to-date information
      about programs, services and activities at the College
   b) Responsible for the co-ownership of College’s web presence by working closely with the IT and
      Web Services departments on the content and look & feel of the website in keeping with the
   c) Develops online marketing communications strategies

6. Supervision
   a) Manages the day-to-day relationship with the Agency of Record
   b) Recruits and selects staff in compliance with Human Resources policies and procedures, FOIPP
      and collective agreements.
   c) Plans, organizes and coordinates formal and informal orientation and training for direct reports.
   d) Conducts performance enhancement process in accordance with standard practice and collective
   e) Initiates disciplinary process, within scope of authority and in consultation with Human
      Resources, in compliance with College policies and standard practices and collective agreements.
   f) Manages and allocates workload when necessary and helps define priorities, approving the use of
      overtime when necessary.
   g) Approves vacation and other absences for all staff under direct supervision.
   h) Ensures that coverage for all vacation and long-term absences for direct reports is in place.
    i) Provides leadership by disseminating information, providing feedback, advising, and coaching.
    j) Ensure legal issues of copyright and FOIP legislation is adhered to.
    k) Responsible to ensure that all regulations of Occupational Health and Safety are adhered to in
       order to provide a safe work environment.

7. Budgeting
   a) Under direction of Associate VP, prepares, monitors, and analyzes the assigned capital and
      operating budgets.
   b) Works closely with Finance Department to ensure all advertising expenditures for the College are
      reconciled on a monthly basis for external media as well as each individual program (department)
   c) Ensures appropriate financial procedures and approvals are followed up to a signing limit of


   • Post-secondary education (degree or diploma) in the areas of Marketing, Communications, Media
       Relations or Public Relations combined with related professional experience

   • 5-7 years related work experience in progressively more responsible positions
   • 2-3 years supervisory experience; proven ability to direct and motivate staff and to work as a
       team member
