Costco Proposal Planning and Budget Membership Survey Fall 2007 Comments Prior to Discussion Advantages: 15-Money to college 11-Student housing 10-Student job opportunities 2-More exposure for GWC -non-resident income -Additional parking -Expansion fo Business in HB -more students to the campus -Partnership with City of HB -Possible improvments to Sports Fields -Lease not sale -Hours 10a-8p could be worse -Can direct much traffic to Center Dr -Footbridge to transportation center -Go shopping on lunch break -Money to city Disadvantages: 14-increased traffic 10-Loss of parking 10-loss of campus land 10-loss of athletic fields 4-Disproprtionate effect on athletics 2-parking is too far away from GWC 2-safety 2-Loss of control of the land -demonstrates that we value income overall -crowds -noise -Impact to new child development center -addition of student housing -affiliation with large commercial entity not an educational purpose -Campus image -loss of significant greenery -inconsistent with environmental sensitivity we've adopted -non-unionized employer -housing proposed under electrical wires -Possible loss of community goodwill -Aesthetics (too large) -Hinderance to campus expansion -Community garden would be gone IF the college were to continue negotiations regarding the proposal, what issues and/or concerns do you believe must be resolved during these negotiations? -How do you insure all costco jobs will go to GWC (current) students? -How do you insure student housing is regulated to benefit the college's students? -Will the athletic department be compensated for loss of land and facilities? 4-How will Athletic facilities be replaced? 6-How will lost parking and needed be replaced? 3-How will traffic concerns be handled? -What will they be doing for GWC? -Why should we let COSTCO have our land? -safety/management of housing AND COSTCO parcel -How will lost greenery be replaced -Get in writing GWC students have preferences for COSTCO jobs -Concern of exposure of students to electrical lines -How will railroad traffic impact student housing? 2-Hours of operation, shipping, etc? -...build something n a much smaller scale that isn't so intrusive. -...will we need that land for future instructional facilities? -Is there an option for a gas station as other COSTCO facilities have? -How long is the lease? -How can we get the land back if we need or want it? CostcoProposalSurveyWithSummary.xls 12/12/2007 Post Costco Proposal Planning and Budget Membership Survey Fall 2007 Comments after Discussion Advantages: 14-amount of money to college 9-student housing 6-job opportunities for students 3-opportunity to buy more land -at the end of the contract, GWC will hve housing, more land & option to not continue lease 2-GWC visibility -expanding our community -maintain control of land (leased) -additional parking -location of student housing Disadvantages: 6-loss of athletic fields 12-traffic congestion 9-parking 6-loss of land 3-cheapens the appearance of our institution -loss of athletes -limits our expansion capacity 2-no educational purpose -proposal is unrelated to higher education goals -too much land is being considered -Having another commercial center on campus is a mistake -COSTCO demographic is unlikely to bring in more students to GWC -campus aesthetics -impact on Child Development Center -noise -addition of student housing -affiliation with large commercial entity as opposed to educational purpose -loss of significant greenery - inconsistent with environmental sensitivity edict we've adopted -safety -Does not enhance the learning environment -non-unionized employer -housing proposed under electrical lines IF the college were to continue negotiations regarding the proposal, what issues and/or concerns do you believe must be resolved during these negotiations? 10-resolve parking loss by assigning staff parking where loss occurs 10-replace lost athletic facilities 7-resolve traffic issues 3-student safety 3-Days and Hours of operation, and delivery schedule conducive to college operations 2-Timeline and plan for student housing -guarantee of revenue -esthetics/blending of COSTCO with campus -COSTCO commit to hiring GWC students, assisting students/staff traveling -Delivery from Center Dr? -impact on recruitment and retention of students? -Footbridge should support parking shuttle traffic -How will lost greenery be replaced? -In writing that GWC students have preference for jobs. -concern of students being exposed to electrical lines -How will railroad traffic impact student housing? -Jobs for students-given so many? -Does it fit into our mission of the college and students? -Jobs must be for GWC students -Housing must be for GWC students -Safe bicycle parking areas on GWC and at student housing (fund bicycles for staff who park far away) CostcoProposalSurveyWithSummary.xls 12/12/2007
