 Proposal

Presented by:
International Network of
Street Papers (INSP)

in partnership with:
Megafon, Norway
The International Network of Street
Papers (INSP)

The INSP is a UK-based charity which supports street paper projects worldwide to
create employment for homeless people. The network connects nearly 100 street
papers in some 40 countries and supports new projects in the developing world.

Street papers are independent newspapers and magazines that provide unique
employment opportunities and enterprising social programmes for people
experiencing poverty and homelessness. Vendors buy copies of the street paper
at a price of 50% or lower than the cover price, then sell the street papers,
keeping the proceeds.

                                       INSP street papers are also an important
                                       media resource with a combined annual
                                       readership of over 100 million.

                                       Through its global news service, INSP is
                                       a united voice against poverty and
                                       injustice and an advocate for the needs
                                       and the rights of people living in poverty.
The INSP Conference

The pulse of the network can always be felt at the annual conference. The
conference consists of specialised skills-building workshops, consultancy
sessions and open forums for best-practice exchange. The event also
provides the rare opportunity for face-to-face networking, mutual
support and motivation.
The event typically brings
together some 100 editors,
directors and social workers
from up to 37 countries.

Training is led by street
paper leaders and external
experts from the business,
media and development
sectors.

2009 Conference Objectives

•   Celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the INSP with a series of special events;

•   Increase the capacity of street papers worldwide by providing tailored workshops;

• Encourage the greater unification of the network through facilitating roundtable
    discussions, best-practice workshops and specialised networking and share
    enterprising project ideas from around the world;

• Improve the capacity of individual street papers to create and utilise quality news
    and information from INSP’s independent news service;

• Organise and run a formal Annual General Meeting (AGM), working closely with
    members to map out the ambitious future strategy of the street paper network;

• Host the second annual ‘International Street Paper Awards’, celebrating street
    papers as quality sources of independent news and social justice issues.
The INSP conference equips our colleagues with
practical tools and strategies to establish and
manage successful street papers in their home
countries. But more than that, our colleagues
leave the event feeling energised and with new
friends they can turn to along the way.

It’s not easy, starting a street paper and it’s even
harder to keep the momentum going year after
year. Its ability to unite and support its
membership is the magic of INSP.
