        Classic Tour of the North
Sightseeing highlights of Thailand include a huge variety of
religious and historic monuments; a rich cultural and artis-
tic heritage; museums and beautiful scenery.

Such key elements are naturally included in sightseeing tour itiner-
aries, but Mekong Travel also seeks out the less obvious attractions
- interesting local markets, festivals, wherever these coincide with
travel plans, traditional handicrafts and industries, plus the oppor-
tunity to meet local people in their own environments. Also includ-
ed are opportunities to try regional cuisine and to see typical or
traditional forms of entertainment.

The tour starts with a tranquil river cruise along the the Chao
Phraya River 70 kms north to the former Siamese capital of
Ayutthaya. This UNESCO World Heritage dates from (1350-1767) and
its impressive ancient ruins of temples and palaces are reminders of
the glorious past of this period of Thai history.

The tour continues to Korat once part of the Angkor-centred Khmer
Empire and onto the UNESCO World Heritage site of Sukhothai, site
of the first independent Thai kingdom. We end up in the heart of the
fabled Golden Triangle, the mountainous region where the borders
of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar (Burma) converge, an area populat-
ed by hilltribes whose lives have changed little over the centuries.

Our hill tribe treks in northern Thailand have been designed to

have strong traditions and religious beliefs and the women still
dress in colourful head-dress and clothes made and elaborately

Beaches of the South
Thailand's Andaman coast extends for 870 km from the Surin Islands on the northern border with Burma to
the southern border with Malaysia. Hundreds of islands are accessible to small craft from Phuket, many of
them uninhabited, forested and fringed with spectacular coral reefs. While the eastern coast stretches from
Malaysia around to Cambodia and encompasses many small islands and a series of fine white-sand beaches.

By car you can explore inland through Rubber plantations, Coconut, pineapples, bananas, and cashews groves to Khao Sok
National Park the home of many rare and endangered species. The more developed areas offer resorts that blend the latest
facilities with traditional architecture, relaxing Spa's and fresh spicy oriental cuisine. High-class entertainment facilities
including golf courses and marinas for those seeking a more active stay.

The many coral fringed reefs include some of the best in the world, and sport diving
has become a major Phuket-based recreational indus-
try. These waters include more than 850 species of
fish as well as sea turtle other marine reptiles.

4 day Khao Sok Safari Tour
Khao Sok National Park is located across a mountain ridge
separating the east and west coasts of the Thai peninsula.
Monsoon rains sweep into these mountains from the Gulf
of Thailand in the east and The Andaman Sea in the west,
making this Thailand's wettest area.

The richness of the tropical forest flora, the abundance of fresh
water and the shelter of the mountains combine to provide an excel-
lent habitat for many species of wildlife - including elephant, guar,
banteng, binturong, languor (or leaf monkey), tiger, leopard, Malay
sun bear, monkey, white-handed gibbon, porcupine, wild boar,
snakes, lizards, bats, hundreds of different butterfly species and
over 180 species of birds, including several kinds of hornbill.

There are guaranteed twice-weekly departures of this tour with English
speaking guide on every Wednesday & Saturday, from Phuket.
