SPECIALIZATION IN THE AREA OF EMERGENCY PUBLIC HEALTH Natural and human-generated disasters exact a human toll that is amenable to public health interventions. The series of courses leading to the specialization in the Area of Emergency Public Health explores the adverse public health effects of disasters and both the public health and emergency management principles that can be applied to reduce those effects. Students interested in specializing in this area are advised to follow an academic pathway that includes four core courses through the Center for Public Health and Disasters (CPHD) and four additional School of Public Health (SPH) elective or suggested courses addressing emergency and disaster public health. In addition to these eight courses, we recommend that students select a field internship from several available opportunities that have been established with a variety of emergency and public health agencies. Students who satisfactorily complete the eight courses and the internship will be given a letter outlining their specialization in the area of emergency public health. For interested and qualified students, there are several research assistant positions in the Center. Ongoing research projects involve both domestic and international disaster related topics. Below is a suggested two-year curriculum schedule for students interested in pursuing this area of specialization. For further information, please see the Center’s website at www.cphd.ucla.edu or contact the Center at (310) 794-0864 or cphdr@ucla.edu.
