MONDAY
The students will enter a dark classroom. The room will model a place without electricity and the desks will be askew. Music will be playing that simulate the sounds of high winds and rain. The teacher will be cowering in the corner. 1. The students will sit on the floor or wherever they can and begin a discussion about what they think we should do to prepare. The teacher will write down brainstorming ideas as students respond. A KWL chart will be completed using a large postit notepad. The lights will come back on and the teacher will instruct students to straighten the desks and pass out the KWL graphic organizer. Students are instructed to copy this from the notepad. 2. The teacher will introduce the hurricane unit and then show a video about Understanding Hurricanes. This video was acquired through united streaming. The video is 9 minutes and 24 seconds long and gives a good overview. 3. To help students continue to think about hurricane preparedness and reflect on the video they saw, for homework they will write down 3 important steps they would take to prepare for a hurricane.

4. Teacher will instruct student to attach their homework (3 important steps they would take to prepare for a hurricane) to their KWL graphic organizer so they can reflect on at the end of the unit. 5. Students will go the computer lab and complete a web-based scavenger hunt. This will give them an introduction to hurricane terms and facts. 6. Students will break up into partner groups and look up the 15 vocabulary words. They will record this definition on to the hurricane vocabulary worksheet provided. 7. Next, students will break up into pre-determined cooperative learning groups. There will be a total of 7 groups. Each group will be assigned three of these vocabulary words. Their role will be to further define these words through illustration, pictures of a skit. Every group will have the word hurricane to define. Students will use the projector and/or Elmo to present their illustration. 8. Students will present their vocabulary illustrations to the entire class. No formal assessment will be done other than teacher observation and feedback. 9. Students will break up into their previous cooperative learning groups and write a short story using their vocabulary words. The group rubric will be used and a total of 50 points can be earned. 10. Students will read the Hurricane and Tornado passage and practice retrieving important information from print. For homework, students will answer 4 questions derived from this article and the teacher will check for student understanding. No grade will be given because the students are practicing this skill. (See attached reading comprehension worksheet.) 11. 12. Students will take a vocabulary quiz. 13. Students will be given the rubric for their end of the unit assessment. The teacher will go into detail about expectations and possible student choices for this assignment. Students will take this summary sheet home and decide on which assessment they chose to complete. Students will review this with their parent/guardian. Parent/guardian signature on returned summary sheet will earn the student 5 extra credit points toward the project. 14. Collect parent/guardian forms and assignment choices. 15. Teacher will show the students the wikispace at www.hurricanesurvivor.wikispaces.c om in the computer lab. All students will go online and review the website. Students will take the hurricane quiz and check their own answers to see how much they know. The answers are on the website. Students will make one comment so they get to experience sharing information about the project. The teacher will review this space daily and answer student questions. 16. The teacher will refer students to their Reading/English Arts notebook under their “Keep Me” section to review the rules for RAFT, PIE. and CUPS. They will also review their citation sheet so that they do not plagiarize. 17. Students begin their choice of the assignment after initial consult with the teacher. All work will be completed in school.
