               Grants to Tribes
           • Since the creation of the COPS Office under the
           Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of
           1994, the COPS Office has provided:
           • 272 tribal law enforcement agencies
           •In 33 states
           •Over $275 million in grant funding
           •For the hiring of 1,661 law enforcement officers
           •And to fund law enforcement equipment,
           training and technology.

              FY2006 COPS Funding:



        About $13 million in FY06 budget available for TRGP
        COPS only open solicitation
        This year’s program will fund equipment and training
         only - no hiring money available.
        Applications available mid April with a deadline of
         May 26, 2006
        Only primary law enforcement agencies will be
         eligible to apply - no special agencies.

        Computers, laptops, docking stations, wireless cards,
         wireless data systems, mobile data terminals,
         printers, scanners, communications systems, mobile
         radios, GPS units, software, training, automated
         fingerprint systems, records management systems,
         VHF repeaters, handheld PDAs, voice analysis
         software, memory upgrades, servers, computer-aided
         dispatch systems, interoperability switch systems,
         satellite phones, P-25 radios with encryption, crime
         mapping systems

            Tips for Successful
            Grant Applications
        Ensure complete compliance with current grants
         (progress reports, Financial Status Reports, past
         audit or site visit issues are resolved, etc.).
        Complete all required sections of the application and
         ensure accuracy of the information.
        Include the appropriate original signatures.
        Narrative sections should be well-written and should
         address all relevant sections/questions.
        Use the application checklists and follow the
         directions carefully.
        Late or incomplete applications will not be
         considered.

             – presents best practices in strategic IT planning and procurement,
               reveals pitfalls to avoid, and consolidates and expands upon
               various sources of relevant information currently available.

            COPS Technology Publications

        Law Enforcement Tech Guide for
         Communications Interoperability: A Guide for
         Interagency Communications Projects
             – Will focus on defining integration and interoperability, exploring the
               technologies, issues and challenges involved, the enterprise
               architecture needed, and the process for achieving successful
               integration and interoperability.
             – Is designed to give an agency executive or project manager,
               background on the subject of communications interoperability and the
               tools to carry out technology initiatives that make interoperability
               possible.

        Law Enforcement Intelligence:
         A Guide for State, Local, and Tribal Law
         Enforcement Agencies
             – This intelligence guide was prepared in response to requests from law
               enforcement executives for guidance on intelligence functions in a
               post-September 11 world. It will help law enforcement agencies
               develop or enhance their intelligence capacity and enable them to
               fight terrorism and other crimes while preserving community policing
               relationships.
