The Brain: Effects Of Childhood Trauma (DVD & VHS)
Summary: Part of a series on understanding, identifying and responding to childhood trauma.
This segment focuses on the effects that childhood trauma has on brain function. Introduces
current research that shows how systems in the brain are activated by trauma, and how trauma
changes neuron response and cognitive pathways. These brain chemistry changes can create
severe adolescent and adult problems such as learning disorders, acting out behaviors,
bonding, attachment, mood problems, and difficulty with problem solving. Shows how
caregivers, teachers and healthcare providers can best deal with these symptoms and how
severe damage to the developing brain can be treated chronologically, but with primary
emphasis on prevention and timely intervention.

Children with Disrupted Attachment (4 DVDs)
Summary: A secure attachment system forms the foundation for a child's development. The
often devastating impact of disrupted or insecure attachment on children's sense of self, and on
their capacity to form attachments with new caregivers, can pose major challenges for foster
and adoptive parents, as well as therapists and group staff. In this video series, the presenters
describe the impact of disrupted attachment on the ways that children see themselves and
interact with others, and how adults can respond most effectively. They explore such topics as
setting limits, avoiding power struggles, providing structure, and building a trusting relationship.

                                                                          Last update: February 2010
Their observations are reinforced by the accounts of foster and adoptive parents, group home
staff, and former foster children.

approximately one third of the Nation's direct and indirect mental health costs each year.
Drawing on the experiences of patients and the insights of medical professionals, this program
examines panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Medications, therapies, and imaging technologies that are leading the way to total recovery for
people with anxiety disorders are spotlighted.

Domestic Violence And Childhood Trauma (VHS)
Summary: Part of a series on understanding, identifying, and responding to trauma. This
segment deals with the effects of domestic violence on children. Trauma in childhood can cause
a variety of physical and emotional problems for children and adults, creating a need for
intervention. Jane Middelton-Moz, a relationship and trauma expert featured in this program,
states that children who experience domestic violence grow up learning to stuff feelings and
emotions. They go through a world in deep freeze, and have whole parts of themselves cut off.
In domestic violence, if a partner wasn't allowed their vulnerability as a child, then as an adult, if
that vulnerability is touched, they will act out their anger.

Exploring Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: Diagnosis And Treatment (VHS)

from the effects of emotional trauma are frequently misdiagnosed as having attention deficit
disorder or chronic depression. Misdiagnosed characteristics of trauma are typically sex related:
boys are hyperactive and act out, and girls dissociate and withdraw. An accurate assessment of
the problem is critical to the success of intervention. Common trauma-related problems for
adolescents also include learning difficulties, test anxiety, difficulty in forming relationships,
difficulty with authority figures, substance abuse, acquiescence to abuse, and violent behavior.
Gives suggestions to teachers to help them form positive attachments and offer concrete help to
students who are victims of emotional trauma. Sample guidelines include being respectful,
giving positive reinforcement, investing quality time and attention, being consistent, and building
honest relationships.

behavior and points out how relapse leads directly to recidivism. (Part 1). Summary: This video

Exposure to significant trauma in the general population is common and its occurrence may be
growing. It is critical for mental health providers to understand risk factors for the development
