The Gala, set for November 7 at the Hyatt Regency downtown, will recognize the Ybarra family for its accolades and contributions to the Houston restaurant industry—total of 23 restaurants. Eugene Ybarra, Russell’s father, founded El Toro’s Restaurants in 1960, and his eight children are all now involved in the Houston restaurant industry. Russell Ybarra started the highly-successful Gringo’s chain in 1993, and opened Bullritos in 2008. Russell’s previous awards include Hispanic Businessman of the Year from the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce as well as Hispanic Male Entrepreneur of the Year from Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Russell is a past president of the GHRA and currently serves as Secretary/Treasurer for the Texas Restaurant Association. “It is a great honor to be recognized by the GHRA with my family,” said Ybarra. “My siblings and I learned so much about the restaurant industry from our father, and it is great for us to share this award together.” The annual GHRA Gala, sponsored by Sysco Food Services of Houston, will feature signature cocktails, an elegant seated dinner, renowned silent auction and raffle and live music by The Fab Four. More than $1 million has been raised through this event in the past six years, with proceeds benefiting the GHRA Scholarship Fund and the Texas Restaurant Association (TRA) Education Foundation.
