Scheduled Development Time for CCFA Faculty:
Information for 2008 - 2009
The College commits approximately $3.5 million of its annual operating budget to the activities undertaken by faculty during scheduled development (SD) time. SD time is administered under the provisions of Clause 10 in the Camosun College Faculty Association (CCFA) Collective Agreement. Since this program was implemented in 1994, faculty have undertaken a wide range of projects: Revision of current programs and development of new programs and services. Revision of programs, courses, and services. Further development and updating of their own knowledge and expertise. Production of textbooks, manuals and course materials. Incorporation of educational technology into the curriculum. Research into specific issues that lead to improved delivery or improved student success. Development and/or facilitation of professional development activities for colleagues. Incorporation of an international perspective into the curriculum.
Scheduled Development Proposals
Scheduled development proposals for 2008-2009 must be submitted electronically to your Chair/peer review committee (if applicable) by January 15, 2008 and to your Associate Dean/Director by February 1, 2008. If you do not submit a proposal by these deadlines, you are deemed to have forfeited your scheduled development time for the coming development year (refer to Clause 10.01d, CCFA Collective Agreement). Please refer to the Timeline and Flow Charts at the end of this document for deadlines related to the details of your proposal as these may vary depending upon when you are planning to take your scheduled development time. If you have taken an unassisted leave of absence in the previous year, your SD entitlement may be reduced. Please contact your administrative office if you need more information regarding your entitlement and refer to Clause 10.01(c), CCFA Collective Agreement, 2007-2010. If you are requesting to defer your time to enable you to work on a longer project, you must describe the project fully and all the sections of the proposal form must be completed for consideration of the deferral request. In addition, the rationale must include the reason for the deferral, based on the nature of the project. If your proposed activity is research based and has the potential to impact human subjects (e.g. secondary analysis of data involving college students), it will require ethical approval from the Research Ethics Board (http://www.camosun.bc.ca/about/research/index.html for more information).

NEW for 08/09
If you will be travelling abroad as part of your SD activity you must meet with the Director or Associate Director of Camosun College International (CCI) to review potential risks for travel to a particular country, emergency plans and contact information. This will also be an opportunity for CCI to review protocol for visits to partner institutions. When the faculty member and Associate Dean/Director agree that the faculty member’s college assignment prevents the faculty member from utilizing all or part of his/her scheduled development time, that faculty member shall defer all or part of the time for future use (clause 10.01(h), CCFA Collective Agreement, 2007-2010).
Please use the 2008-2009 Scheduled Development Time Proposal form to submit your SD proposal electronically.
Scheduled Development Reporting
Preparation of a report is considered part of the SD time and is normally submitted on the last day of the scheduled development period to the Associate Dean/Director. However, circumstances may necessitate a later reporting date. Please arrange this with your Associate Dean/Director. Note: Sick days or vacation taken during SD time must be reported to the School. Scheduled development activities must result in a substantive report (refer to the detailed CCFA Scheduled Development Reporting Guidelines). In addition to a cover page, one page abstract and a detailed report on the outcomes of the SD activity, copies of materials, papers, and other relevant documents are also submitted with the report (when applicable). Note: Entitlement to the next year’s development time is contingent on the submission of a satisfactory report.
Please use the 2008-2009 Scheduled Development Reporting form to submit your SD reporting information electronically.
Scheduled Development Activities and Outcomes
Clause 10 of the 2007-2010 CCFA Collective Agreement states (http://www.camosunfaculty.ca/CollectiveAgreements.htm): Scheduled development time for faculty is based on the recognition of the need for continuous development of faculty members, of educational practice, and of the organization. Scheduled development time and activities support faculty members in the development of their own learning related to their current or potential role(s) at the College and in the application of their knowledge, skills and awareness to the ongoing development of the College as a learningSD Information 2008/2010 Page 2 of 8
centered institution. Scheduled development time and activities support faculty members in responding to identified learning and development needs of students, departments, community groups, the College, and the individual faculty members themselves. While scheduled development activities vary broadly, activities should be classified among the following three general categories: 1. Professional Development focuses on the faculty member’s development of knowledge, skills, and awareness related to his/her educational practice, area(s) of professional expertise, and college role(s). 2.
