ASCD Proposal Journey into Web 2

Final 7.11.08 K12 Online Conference 2008 Proposal There’s Something Going on Here You Need to Know About… In July 2007 a superintendent had his first introduction to the Internet world where collaborating, contributing and creating are the norm. Later that year, in SecondLife, the superintendent met the International Society for Technology in Education’s 2007 Technology Leader of the Year who has mentored him, as the need arose, during a year and a half of his self-directed learning. The superintendent has learned much about the people, platforms, and the pedagogy of this online world with help from people like the mentor who live all over the world and who accepted his invitation to become part of the online network of educators he has developed and nurtured since 2007. What are Ustream, Twitter, YouTube, Elluminate, Diigo, Mind42, Jing, SecondLife, Google Docs, and TED? What do they have to with learning? Our capacity to learn? to share? to invent? Come join the conversation as the superintendent, Dennis Richards, and the mentor, Charlene Chausis, “tell you three stories on the way to one argument.”1 Stories Claiming What We Imagine – The Power to Transform Learning Beyond Boundaries – Spreading the Read-Write Culture Kids Global Climate Change Institute – Promise and Reality Argument 21st Century Literacies – How do we get there from here? 1 Larry Lessig: How creativity is being strangled by the law 9. Goals State the purpose and intent of this session. Include presentation goals, objectives and anticipated outcomes for participants Purpose: To tell stories that engage the audience enough to create conversations around important Web 2.0 questions such as:  What do we imagine for our students’ and teachers’ learning?  How do we spread the understanding of Web 2.0’s potential for learning?  How do the promise and the reality of Web 2.0 mesh?  What challenges do we face trying to move toward universal development of a read/write web culture?  How can we be sure of success? Goals:  To stimulate a passionate commitment  To introduce participants to the new story of learning  To motivate participants to advocacy  To get participants to join an online community  To inspire participants to collaborate online  To move participants to invent Outcomes: There’s Something Going on Here You Need to Know About… will  Stimulate a passionate commitment in participants to learning more about the possibilities of using the Internet to facilitate student and educator learning,  Introduce participants to the premise behind Stephanie Pace Marshall’s book, The Power to Transform, the new story of learning our students need to experience in every classroom and school,  Motivate participants to help move the conversation about the read/write web into the mainstream of professional development for all teachers and administrators,  Inspire participants to join the global effort to instruct students about Global Climate Change through participation in the Kids Global Climate Change Institute community of scientists and educators committed to that goal,  Provide a platform for inventing and showcasing follow-up projects related to our presentation, and  Provide a winter and a spring live invention sessions for participants during the 2008-2009 school year. 10. Justification: Why does your presentation fit in your selected strand? Dennis and Charlene are both serving as catalysts for broad-based pedagogical change in our respective schools, districts, states and on the national stage. Will showcase our successes and disappointments working with teachers, librarians, administrators, parents, students, and professional associations. We will “…amplify critical issues which must be addressed for innovative learning methods to be adopted.” We will touch upon many issues, but the focus of our presentation will be on five critical topics. 1. Web 2.0 Tools 2. Learning 3. Collaboration 4. Sharing 5. Invention We intend to “explore and amplify a menu of practical ideas for educators in diverse contexts who want to continue amplifying possibilities in our schools.” 11. Theme: How does your presentation support this year's conference theme: "Amplifying Possibilities"?  It’s about the Potential of the Tools Amplified through Pedagogy. We will show how the potential of the Internet is related to the new story of learning that Stephanie Pace Marshall articulates, “Mind shaping is world shaping; How we think is how we shape the world. When you change the story, you change the map. When you change the map, you change the landscape. When you change the landscape, you change your experiences and choices. And when you change your choices, you can change your mind. (And why does that matter?) Because mind changing is world shaping.”  It’s about the Potential of Best Practice Read/Write Web Examples Amplified through a Three-Year Implementation Plan We are Developing with ASCD  It’s about the Application of Best Practices Amplified through the Potential of the Kids Global Climate Change Institute. Addendum:  We intend to produce a teaser.  We will has supplementary materials online for K12OL participants
