Why I Want To Be A Lawyer

I first became interested in becoming an attorney my freshman year at Princeton High School. In that year I

took an introductory law studies course taught by a former attorney, Robert Sherlock. As I developed my relationship

with him, I began to admire him. Mr. Sherlock became my role model and helped me navigate my way through high

school. While in his class I read Ralph Waldo Emerson’s poem Success. After reading the poem, I began to think of

Mr. Sherlock as the success in which Emerson spoke. It was at that point I decided that I wanted to be an attorney, as

well. I believed that by becoming an attorney it would allow me to lead a successful and meaningful life.

Since high school my career goal has become much more concrete and personal. Originally I just wanted to be

an attorney, but as I have matured my goals have matured as well. I want to begin my career as a public defender, and

transition to a role as a civil rights advocate. Looking back to my hometown of Cincinnati Ohio I saw far too many

under privileged men becoming incarcerated. Not just men, but young black men. Complicating matters in my mind, is

the fact that these men were incarcerated yet often did not know what charges had been brought against them. These

gentlemen were often my classmates, and while I will not argue as to their innocence in each of these cases, to this day

it saddens me that they were in essence unjustly tried.

This is why I am hoping to become a lawyer. I want and work exclusively with under privileged young men in

an attempt to change this trend.
