In this research, self determination skills of hearing impaired and
hearing students in transition period (aged between 11 and 18 years) were
examined according to teacher and parent views. The research group is
consist of 64 teachers, 62 of these teachers are studying with hearing
impaired students, 102 of them are studying with hearing students and; 97
parents, 48 of the parents have hearing impaired children, 49 have children
who don’t have any disabiity. In the study, two evaluation scales which were
developed by researcher were used in order to collect data; that are
“Assesment Scale of Determination Skills Of Hearing Impaired And Hearing
Students In Transition Period (aged between 11 and 18 years) According To
Teacher Views” and “Assesment Scale of Determination Skills Of Hearing
Impaired And Hearing Students In Transition Period (aged between 11 and
18 years) According To Parent Views”. Furthermore personel inquiry forms
were applied to both teachers and parents who are in research group. Scope
and structure validation studies were defined for the validity of both scales
and, reliability of instruments were defined by Cronbach Alpha Method.
Research data analysis were done with SPSS package program. To asses if
there was a meaningful difference among varibales according to the purpose
of the resaerch, t-test was used in measurements.
                                                                               8

In order to describe the self determination skills of hearing impaired
and hearing students in transition period (aged between 11 and 18 years)
according to teacher and parent views, the study was based on the Model
Focused on Individual Beliefs, Knowledge and Skills which was developed by
Field and Hoffman in 1994. The views of teachers and parents were collected
according to the five major components of this model for self deteremination
skills; Know Yourself, Value Yourself, Plan, Act, and Experienced Outcomes
and Learn. The findings showed that teachers and parents believed that,
female students are more self determined than male students and the age of
students don’t effect the self determination skills. According to teachers’ point
of view, self determination skills of hearing impaired students are lower than
the self determination skills of hearing peers. According to parents’ point of
view, there wasn’t a meaningful difference between hearing impaired and
hearing students regarding the aspects of self determination.
