ABOUT THE MOTOR ACCIDENTS COMPENSATION SCHEME
The Territory Insurance Office Act establishes the Motor Accidents Compensation scheme. The scheme
is administered by the Territory Insurance Office on behalf of the NT Government. The no-fault scheme
compensates motorists injured, or their dependants if they are killed, as a result of a motor accident in the
Northern Territory or interstate if a Northern Territory registered motor vehicle is involved.
The scheme is funded by motor vehicle owners who pay compensation contributions when they register Northern Territory vehicles.
It is designed to compensate people quickly and fairly. The scheme pays compensation available under the Motor Accidents Compensation
Act. Such compensation includes loss of earning capacity benefits, medical or hospital care, rehabilitation services, loss of limb, permanent
impairment and, in event of death, funeral expenses, benefits for surviving spouses, dependant or orphaned children and, where appropriate,
   dependant parents.
