CSC481 – Fall 2008 Assignment 2 – XNA Game Due: (see each part for due dates)
Summary
For this project you will be creating a game using Microsoft XNA Game Studio 2.0. Your game will include your own creative contributions but must also adhere to the constraints outlined in this assignment description. Prior to development, you will write up your game design in a proposal that must be accepted by the TA. As a starting point for your game, you are allowed (but not required) to build off of the game used in the in-class tutorial (source available here: http://creators.xna.com/enus/education/gettingstarted/bg2d/chapter9). After the game is completed you will write a short postmortem detailing what you have accomplished. You are allowed (and encouraged) to work in pairs for this assignment. Each member of a pair will be given the same grade. You are in charge of determining the division of work in your group. Pairs are expected to do more (although not 2x more) work than students working alone. Game Constraints Your game must have the following elements: A back story and setting/environment that you have created A graphical entity controlled by the player An autonomous entity (or entities) constantly in motion Interaction between the player’s entity and the autonomous entities Player must make an important choice (or choices) at some point in the game An additional creative gameplay element decided by you Sound effects providing feedback to the player
Part 1: The Proposal
Due: September 29, 11:59pm Your proposal should address how your game will meet the game constraints listed above as well as anything else you feel is relevant to your game. Proposal Submission Procedure: Submit your proposal through WolfWare (Assmt2Proposal). Accepted file formats are pdf, plain text, and Word document. The TA will reply with acceptance or suggestions for adjustment. The TA will review your proposal as soon as possible after your submission so you can begin working on the game.
Part 2: The Game
Due: October 22, 11:59pm
The game should be created using Microsoft XNA Game Studio 2.0. See the class wiki for setup instructions and helpful links. The game must adhere to the constraints listed above and should follow from your submitted proposal. If you decide to change your game significantly from your proposal, please alert the TA. The game should be submitted with a Read Me file containing your game’s instructions. The use of copyrighted images and sounds is permitted. In the Read Me file, give credit for any content not generated by you or your partner.
Game Submission Procedure: Zip your game’s folder and submit it through WolfWare (under Assmt2). You may also submit the game on CD to the TA during class on October 22.
Part 3: The Post-Mortem
Due: October 27, 11:59pm What went right? What went wrong? Does your completed game reflect your initial vision? If not, what changed over the course of development? Would you have done anything differently? One or two paragraphs is sufficient. Post-Mortem Submission Procedure: Submit through WolfWare (Assmt2PostMortem). Accepted file formats include pdf, plain text, and Word document.
