                         WORKFORCE CENTRAL FLORIDA NOW ACCEPTING
                              APPLICATIONS FOR SUMMER JOBS

ORLANDO, FLA … WORKFORCE CENTRAL FLORIDA (WCF) is now accepting online applications for its
Summer Job Connection, an employment program that will provide valuable summer work
experience in local jobs for 750 young adults ages 16-21, which in turn, will make an immediate
financial impact on the local economy. Since the online application launched on April 5 at midnight,
WCF has received 194 job seeker applications and five employer applications for a total of 52
positions.


The young adults will have an opportunity to earn $8.25 an hour and work 35 hours a week for either
six or 11 weeks with employers from Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Sumter counties.
Participants will be placed in employment opportunities with nonprofits, government agencies and
targeted private sector employers. Enrollment goals will be distributed within the region based on
population statistics. WCF will hire 545 from Orange County, 75 each from Osceola and Seminole
counties, 40 from Lake County and 15 from Sumter County.

Who Qualifies for Summer Jobs and How Do They Apply?
Job Seeker Eligibility Requirements:
    1. Youth between the ages of 16-21. Youth must be 16 years old by April 5, 2010 and cannot
       be past the age of 21 before June 28, 2010.
    2. Must be a resident of Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Lake or Sumter counties.
    3. A Low-income individual. Low income is defined as an individual who:
           a. Receives, or is a member of a family that receives, cash payments under a federal,
                state or local public assistance program for which eligibility is determined by an
                income test such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or
                Supplemental Security Income (SSI);

          b. Received an income, or is a member of a family that received a total family income,
               for the six-month period prior to application for the program involved (exclusive of
               unemployment compensation, child support payments, payments described in
               paragraph “a” above, and old-age and survivors insurance benefits received under
               section 202 of the Social Security Act (42 U.S.C. 402)) that, in relation to family size,
               does not exceed the 70 percent of the lower living standard income level, for an
               equivalent period;
          c. Is a member of a household that receives, or has been determined within the six-
               month period prior to application for the program involved to be eligible to receive,
               food stamps pursuant to the Food Stamp Act of 1977 (7 U.S.C. 2011 et seq.);
          d. Qualifies as a homeless individual, as defined in subsections (a) and (c) of section
               103 of the Stewart B. McKinney Homeless Assistance Act (42 U.S.C. 11302);
          e. Is a foster child on behalf of whom state or local government payments are made; or
          f. In cases permitted by regulations promulgated by the Secretary of Labor, is an
               individual with a disability whose own income meets the requirements of a program
               described in paragraphs “a” or “b” above, but who is a member of a family whose
               income does not meet such requirements.
   4. Is an individual who has one or more of the following barriers:
          a. Deficient in basic literacy skills;
          b. High school dropout;
          c. Homeless
          d. Pregnant or a parent;
          e. An offender;
          f. An individual who requires additional assistance to complete an educational program
               or to secure and hold employment because of one of the following barriers:
                        Disability;
                        Lack of a work history;
                        Has not worked for the same employer for longer than three consecutive
                        months in the 12 months prior to registration;
                        Lack of employability skills;
                        Natural disasters;
   5. Must complete Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) and score 6.0 in reading.
   6. Must complete National Retail Federation (NRF) customer service training and pass
      certification.

How Does the Program Work for Employers and How Can They Apply?
WCF will pay the wages of the young adults in the program, who may work 35 hours a week for either
six or 11 weeks. WCF is looking for unique, innovative internship positions with employers
throughout the region that fit the following criteria:

       •   Nonprofit or government agency
       •   Private sector companies in the following industries: renewable/sustainable energy;
           photonics; optics; modeling and simulation; nanotechnology/nanoscience; digital media;
           green jobs; Internet securities; biotechnology; science, technology, engineering and
           math; healthcare; health informatics and electronic health records
       •   Central Florida employers must be located in Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Lake or Sumter
           Counties
