merican summer camps have existed for over 100 years! There are
more than 10,000 camps in the USA, that together, serve more than 10
million people a year. About 2,200 camps are accredited by the American
Camping Association (ACA), of which Camp Leaders is a business member.
These camps must meet over 300 standards for safety and quality.
Camps’ main focus is on providing a safe environment in the outdoors to
nurture young people’s development through fun play, physical activities and
friendships. In addition, camps have employed international staff for decades
to promote cultural understanding. This international employment is extremely
important to the camp industry and the families it serves. Camp Leaders is

There are three different types of jobs at summer
camps: Camp Counselor, Activity Leader or
As a Counselor, it is your job to be a role model Camp Robin Hood, New Hampshi
to the children. The role of counselor is like that of
a sibling/parent/teacher and friend, all rolled into
one. It is hard work, but extremely rewarding and
lots of fun.
As an activity leader, you teach children skills in
a particular area. Activities include tennis, sailing,
horseback riding, biking, theater/performing arts,
land sports, and many more. You must be 18
years or older to apply as a Camp Counselor or Camp Chippewa,
Activity Leader or Counselor and be available for Minnesota
at least eight to nine weeks from May/mid-June
Working at a summer camp is especially valuable
for those who want to work with children, but also
a great way for anyone to gain new skills and job
experience. While you help the children grow and
gain knowledge of your culture, you develop your
own leadership and communication skills and
leave knowing you have had an impact on the
lives of many children. Camp Hillcroft, New York

travel after camp
Summer camp can be used as a great first step to other fantastic travel possibilities. You have 30
days after the end of your J1 visa for travel within the United States. Many participants decide to
travel the US through an organized tour, with a group of camp friends or on their own. We strongly
encourage you to become a tourist for some part of your trip! Camp Leaders can offer advice for your
travel plans but sometimes the best trips are planned once you’ve already arrived at camp!
Camp Leaders can also help book around-the-world flights or flights to other destinations besides
the United States. Ask us about these other fun travel opportunities! Rosie Colson, UK Participant,
and friends in New York City
“ Camp was amazing and afterwards I travelled through places
including the US, Mexico, Peru, and Europe. Not only was the cost
of the trip reduced dramatically, but camp gave me friends and
contacts in many of the countries I visited.”
