Student Research Proposal Template for the UNLV AAA UPP

This document is intended to serve as a guide to researchers for submitting proposals under the
UNLV Advanced Accelerator Applications University Participation Program (UNLV AAA
UPP). It should not be viewed as the only format for a proposal. In fact, any format you are
comfortable with can be used, provided that it includes the following elements (described
below): Cover letter from the National Laboratory collaborator, Scientific Investigation Plan,
and the requested budget (with budget justification and proposed schedule).

Additional information for proposal authors can be found in the following documents:
   • Instructions for Principal Investigator: Proposal submittal process, general instructions,
       evaluation process and criteria, program schedule;
   • Proposal Template: (this document) Template for proposals, description of categories
       required, instructions/suggestions to researchers (repeated from Instructions document);
   • Budget Template: Budget forms for submittal, spreadsheets for generating budget
documents, instructions on how to use budget forms, information on calculating indirect
costs, and examples of how to put common requests into the budget; and,
   • Sample Proposal: A sample proposal (perhaps more than 1) for reference.

Proposal Template

Cover Letter (1 page)
   • Written by a National Laboratory collaborator and/or technical leader
   • It should describe where the proposed research fits into the National AAA effort
   • It should include a signature or some indication of support from the National Laboratory
       collaborator and/or technical leader

Title Page (1 page)
    • Title of Proposal
    • Identify Principal Investigator, UNLV Collaborators, Students (if identified), National
        Laboratory Collaborators
    • Contact Information
    • Technical Focus Area (Accelerators, Fuels, Separations, Systems, and/or Transmuter)
    • Abstract
        - Brief Summary of work (e.g., summarize methodology to be used)
    • Work proposed for academic year (or funding period)
        - Summarize Scientific Investigation Plan
        - Summarize expected results (what parameter will be measured, what theory tested, etc.)
        - Funding requested for project (include out-year requests as well)

Proposal Narrative (about 6 pages)

Background and Rationale
   • Scientific and project relevant background information. Discussion of any theories
underlying the proposed research, as well as any theory necessary to evaluate or
examine the proposed work. Brief review of literature, if applicable.

Research Objectives and Goals
   • Bullet format detailing objectives/goals of the research proposal
   • Parameters to be measured
   • Theories to be examined
   • Phenomena to be examined

Technical Impact
   • What contribution will this work make to the AAA project?
   • Include research objectives and goals in prose form

Research Approach / Scientific Investigation Plan
   • Planned experiments, expected research path (as best as possible)
   • For projects requesting more than 1 month of faculty time per graduate student year,
detail the work that will be performed by the student and by the work to be performed by
       the faculty researcher

Capabilities at UNLV and National Laboratories
   • Identify equipment needs
   • Identify equipment and facilities currently available for use on this project at the
University and at the National Labs
   • List and discuss equipment that will be purchased for this project
   • List and discuss needs for large equipment to complete research. This section is needed
to support the justification of new equipment purchases for user laboratories at UNLV.
   • For projects requiring large equipment purchases, include fall-back options to do work if
equipment is not acquired by the University or will not be available during the research
       project year

Project Timeline with Milestones and Deliverables
   • Length of project
   • Expected milestones and/or decision points
   • Deliverables (e.g., quarterly progress reports, research papers)

Curriculum Vitae for Principle Investigator(s)
   • Brief (2 page) CV for Principle Investigator, including current research interests
   • Include a summary of time allocation for the project year (required for auditing
       purposes)

Budget Information (about 6 pages)
   • Use the Budget Template that provides guidance on the following required elements:
       - Budget Explanation
       - Hardcopy of the Budget Request Spreadsheet
       - Budget Schedule for proposed work

Guidelines for Curriculum Vitae and Current/Pending Support Statement

This information is required for any senior personnel (not students) that will be directly funded
by the proposed work. The CV is requested to provide background information on the UNLV
investigators to the DOE reviewers. The current and pending support statement is requested for
auditability of the program.

Biographical Sketch (Curriculum Vitae)

The biographical sketch is limited to a maximum of two pages. It should contain name and
position title; organization; degree, years and field of study for each academic degree; a listing
of research and professional positions, awards and honors; and references to all publications for
the last three years, along with any earlier publications pertinent to the proposed work. If this list
causes the biographical sketch to exceed two pages, select the most pertinent publications to stay
within the page limit.

Current/Pending Support Statement

Senior personnel to be supported by the proposed work are requested to list all their current and
pending federal and non-federal support. If the project for which support is being sought is
being or has been previously funded, identify such support. The Principle Investigator (PI) needs
to submit this statement even if they are not being directly funded by the proposed work. UNLV
and other collaborators listed in the proposal that do not receive funding for their work do not
need to submit this statement.
