Overview

       EMV – Europay-MasterCard-Visa – common standard for
issuing and acquiring chip cards, which has subsets MChip
        (MasterCard) and VSDC (Visa).
 Initially MChip 2 was compatible with VSDC.
 New version MChip 4 is not compatible either with MChip or
VSDC, this is why double investments into infrastructure are
        required.
 MCI and VISA took the decision to unify the standards
MChip and VSDC into one common standard both in
acquiring – CCD and in issuing – CPA (payment
        application).
 Starting from Q2’2006 banks will be able to issue and
acquire chip cards of both MasterCard and Visa using the
        single approach.

VIS vs. MChip
 VIS specifications evolved with a strong focus on backward
  compatibility.
 Today VIS product (1.4.0 based on EMV2000) is fully backward
compatible with the previous terminal and network infrastructure
  based on VIS 1.3.2.
 The evolution from MChip 2 to the MChip 4 does not allow backward
  compatibility.

                 MChip 2

                             Non backward compatible MChip 4

What is CCD and CPA?

                       Common Core Definitions
(CCD) – set of common data
                       definitions and processes
VSDC between the EMV chip card
                       and the Issuer host interface.

                       Application (CPA) –
                       unified chip payment
         EMV application for both Visa
                       and MasterCard.

Mandates for Visa Acquirers

 Effective 1 October 2005, all new full chip data
acquirers must accept and process VIS and
        Common Core Definition chip cards
 Effective 1 April 2006, all full chip data acquirers
must accept and process VIS and Common Core
        Definition chip cards
 Visa Europe is also mandating Acquirer support
for Field 55 in the same timeframes
 All other regions are strongly recommending
        support for Field 55
