Details about the organisation
Surface Gallery is a centrally located independent artspace in Nottingham, run as a co-operative
by a group of dedicated volunteers. We aim to support emerging artists and promote diversity
within the arts locally and nationally. The gallery has built up a strong reputation for its
innovative and varied exhibition programme. After relocating we now have space for a variety of
activities and artists’ studios to improve the service we provide.

Vision
Surface Gallery is working towards to becoming a nationally recognised artist led organisation
hosting high quality, innovative and contemporary exhibitions supporting emerging artists.

Aims and Objectives:
 To support emerging artists, by offering them a platform from which to develop their
practice.
 To provide an exhibition space which is a vibrant environment for creative practice and
dialogue.
 To offer opportunities for artists and volunteers to develop skills and gain knowledge for
their own professional development.
 To promote diversity within work shown.
 To develop new audiences for contemporary visual arts.
 To be an integral part of the artistic community locally and nationally, making
connections with artists and creative groups across the UK.
 To uphold the importance of a co-operatively run art space,

Exhibition Policy
Proposals will be assessed on the following criteria:

 The work should exhibit high quality ideas combined with a high level of skill.
 The work should be contemporary.
 The work should be stimulating.

Work is assessed on its merits, rather than the past achievements of the artist and there is no
preference regarding medium in which the work is made.

Prices
Solo or Group show

£300 per week

Show Curated by the Gallery

The gallery can also curate group shows and are open to individuals making submissions to be
part of a group. The individual charges are as follows:
2 person show: 1st week £170
3 person show: 1st week £120
4 person show: 1st week £95

Please contact the gallery for details of costs for being part of a larger group. All prices include
one Evening Opening, 6pm-8pm. Invigilation of the space is provided free of charge by Surface
Gallery Volunteers

Details of Payment

 Half the amount must be paid as a deposit at the time of booking the exhibition to reserve
the exhibition dates until the balance is settled. A security deposit of £100 (refundable in full
on successful fulfillment of contract) will also be required. To secure dates the balance of
the amount must be paid in full no later than three months prior to start of exhibition

 These prices may be subject to change without notice.

 Exhibitions already booked and where the initial deposit has been paid will be charged at
the rate current on payment of their deposit.

 Exhibition dates should allow time for load in, installation and load out.

 All refreshments etc. for private view or other events must be provided by exhibitor. If
Surface Gallery staff are required for bar duties etc. there may be additional costs.

A completed application form, images (photos, jpegs) or moving images (DVD PAL), exhibition
proposal with artist statement and stamped addressed envelope for the return of images.
NB Please ensure you have sufficient postage on your envelope.

Proposals submitted as ‘Group’ should comprise 2 or more artists submitting collectively, with images
from all participants included. If applying for a curated show, please submit as an individual.

*NB Acceptance for a curated show is not a guarantee that such a show will go ahead.
Gallery will liaise with artists accepted for curated shows during the process of finding
suitable co exhibitors.
