INTRODUCTION

       Originally known as “ Nutrition Research Laboratories”, this Institute was
established in Coonoor in 1918 and was located in the Pasteur Institute of South
India. The Institute was shifted to Hyderabad in 1959. In view of the wide area of
its operations, it was renamed as National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) during its
Golden Jubilee held in 1978, and Platinum Jubilee in 1993. ICMR the apex body
completed 85 years of existence by Oct’15, 1996. This institute is one of the
biggest permanent Institutes (22) and is under the aegies of “ INDIAN COUNCIL
OF MEDICAL RESEARCH ” (ICMR), New Delhi and SECRETARY, DEPARTMENT OF
HEALTH RESEARCH, MOHFW, New Delhi. This institute also houses “ FOOD AND
DRUG TOXICOLOGY RESEARCH CENTRE (FDTRC) ”, “ NATIONAL CENTRE FOR
LABORATORY ANIMAL SCIENCE ” (NCLAS) AND “ NATIONAL NUTRITION
MONITORING BUREAU “ (NNMB) .

LIBRARY LAYOUT
      The Library is located in the main Building to the left of the main entrance

and occupies three spacious halls covering a total area of 7500 Sq. Ft. Hall-I,

Hall-II, & Hall – III are air-conditioned. (Lay out plan enclosed).

ARRANGEMENT

             Bound volumes of Journals are arranged alphabetically (dictionary-
              wise) in Hall – I & Hall – II.
             Secondary Periodicals like Biological Abstracts, Index Medicus etc.,
              are arranged in Hall – III.
             Latest arrivals of Journals are displayed in Hall-II for one week.
             Reports of ICMR, NIN, FAO, WHO and other Institutes are arranged
              in Hall – III.
             Current Journals are arranged alphabetically under main subject in
              Hall – III in special Pigeon-hole display racks, fixed on to the walls.
             Books & Reports are arranged in Hall – III in Mezzanine wing.
              Classified – wise as per the Library Classification Code: Universal
              Decimal Classification (UDC).
             Reference collection like Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, important
              Reports collection, Theses and Dissertations, New Books and Reserved
              collection etc., are arranged in Hall No. – III.
             Annual Reviews and other regular serials (Book type) are alphabetically
              arranged separately in Hall – III (Towards extreme end of Mezzanine
              wing ).


MEMBERSHIP FACILITIES

      i)      INSTITUTE STAFF

      Membership is extended to all the NIN staff including Scientists, Technical

and Administrative staff and also to the regular trainees at the Institute. They

should register their names at the Library Counter and can get books, reports,

journals etc., issued on their names at the issue counter by producing ID Card.

In case of losses, the borrower is requested to report the loss immediately to the

Librarian.   The lost book should be substituted with its available edition in the

market. Refund of the proportionate cost of the book lost, will be accepted only as

last resort, within a reasonable time.

      Books have to be got issued/returned only in the presence of the

library/Issue-Counter staff.       No Library book be taken out of the Library

before/after library hours.

        There is no library Membership for Staff appointed on the Projects of the

Institutes.

        ii.    LIBRARY WORKING HOURS

          The Library is kept open for Scientists from 9.00 AM to 10.00 PM

throughout the year except on holidays from 9.00 AM to 5.30 PM. However, issues

are restricted to working days only from 9.00 AM to 5.30 PM.


        iii.   SCIENTISTS FROM OUTSIDE

        Scientists from Medical Colleges, Home Science Colleges and other Research

Institutes can also become as visitor member by producing an introductory letter

from their respective Heads of Depts.       However, borrowing facilities are not

extended to them. They are permitted to use the Library only on working days of

the Institute between 9.00 AM to 5.00 PM. They are expected to occupy seats in

Hall-III of the Library.          Outsiders are not permitted to bring their personal

books / bags, Cellphone etc., inside the Library. They should keep all their personal

bags, books, etc., at the Property-Counter.            They will also have to record their

name, address and time of arrival and departure and put their signature in the

Register kept at the counter. SILENCE IS TO BE MAINTAINED.

USER – EDUCATION – PROGRAMME (UEP)

      Continuous UEP for the Scientists and the trainees is being imparted in order

to improve the effective utilization of the print/non-print materials available in the

Library. The Prestosign Board, Linodex, Display Chart of Current Journals Receipt,

Catalogue, the Library Guide, and the Map of the Library are useful in this

connection.

MEDLINE CD’s 1966 – C (www.pubmed.com)

      Medical Literature Analysis & Retrieval System (Medlars on-line = Medline).

(National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, USA).      It is the counter part of the

Cumulated Index Medicus, giving abstracts. It indexes articles from over 3700

international journals published in US & 70 other Countries. (Monthly updates).


CURRENT CONTENTS ON DISKETTS WITH ABSTRACTS, ISI, Pa, USA.(1996-2000)

      It gives the forth coming articles with abstracts from over 1200

international journals and a large number of Life Sciences text books.


IN-HOUSE LIBRARY DATABASE


      Library has acquired Total Library Solution Software and so far

(1) Books 15,825 (2) Reports 10,586 (3) Thesis 429 (4) Journal / Megazine

32,814 were inputted.



COMPUTERISATION OF LIBRARY :

      Efforts have been made to computerize the library resources and services.

Staff members are requested to Register their names and get the Barcodes pasted

on their Identity Cards issued by the Institute. Since library has introduced

computerized Issues / Returns system.


O P A C : Do use Online Public Access Catalogue for searching the literature

available in the library. All the Users can access Library Holdings from their

desktop for which a shortcut TLSS created.


E-MAIL / INTERNET
        E-mail facility has been introduced in 1996 and we can send/receive

messages, letters, files etc., to any one in the World those who are on the

INTERNET.

    Here authors/Owners can self archive their Scientific and technical
    documents.

     For this they need to register once in order to obtain a User ID in OpenMED
     system

    No registration is required for Searching the archive or viewing the documents.

 Through NICNET of NIC, this Centre, Commissioned in 1988, provides off-line/ on-
line searches from MEDLINE, POPLINE, TOXLINE, AIDSLINE data - bases etc. E-
mail/INTERNET facilities through its RENNIC computer network are also made
available.


      This centre also provides Full-Text Document Delivery Service from any

MEDLINE covered Journal for Rs. 500=00 per article.           Details of NIN Library

holdings are also made available in their database.
