How to Submit a Complaint

If you believe a police department employee has acted improperly, you may make a complaint
to any on duty supervisor or to the office of Internal Affairs by calling the Police Main Desk:
303-739-6000.

You can also submit a complaint online or, you may also make a complaint in person by
responding to a district station. You should inform any on duty officer or Police Department
employee that you wish to make a complaint and ask to speak to the on-duty Patrol
Lieutenant. The Patrol Lieutenant will attempt to determine if your complaint is a
misunderstanding or an allegation of misconduct. If you do not wish to speak to a supervisor
immediately, you may download a printable complaint form (pdf) and mail it to:

We request that you identify yourself, but this is not essential. It is important that you provide
as much specific detail as you know at the time to include the date, time, and location of the
incident, any witness information, and any identifying information regarding the officers
involved.

To facilitate the follow-up investigation and our notification and response to you, we will ask
for your name, date of birth, residence and business addresses, and telephone numbers. You
will be informed of the investigation findings, usually in the form of a letter.

Anonymous allegations will be accepted and investigated to whatever degree possible based
on the information given.

While supporting the reporting of legitimate complaints as a means by which the department
can be accountable to the public, the department also seeks to hold members of the public
responsible for the reporting of false and malicious allegations. The Aurora Police Department
will initiate appropriate legal action in cases involving false reporting.
