MEMORANDUM FOR SEE DISTRIBUTION SUBJECT: Requirements for Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B) Certification
1. The United States Army Medical Department (AMEDD) requires that health care specialists with the 91W/68W Military Occupation Specialty (MOS) maintain current Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B), or higher, certification in accordance with Army Regulation 40-68. 2. Medics who are new to the Army can obtain and renew their EMT-B certification in the following manner: a. Enlisted medical personnel are required to successfully complete a 110 hour National Registry Emergency Technician Basic (NREMT-B) Course, which includes practical hands-on examinations and a written examination comprised of 150 multiple choice questions. This training is conducted during Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. b. Medics who completed EMT-B during AIT are eligible to recertify on or before their 31 March expiration date by completing the NREMT application, attaching a copy of their diploma or DA FORM 1059, and submitting a $15.00 re-registration fee to NREMT, Rocco V. Morando Building, 6610 Busch Blvd, P.O. Box 29233, Columbus, Ohio 43229. c. NREMT registration forms can be obtained at www.nremt.org or contact the NREMT office at (614) 888-4484. d. NREMT registration fees paid by 91W Soldiers are reimbursed by the Office of the Surgeon General (OTSG), 5111 Leesburg Pike, Skyline 5 Suite 401B, Falls Church, VA 22041. OTSG telephone number is (703) 681-1781. 3. Experienced medics can maintain their EMT-B certification by using the following options: a. Soldiers with the 91W/68W MOS must complete 24 hours of refresher EMT-B training and 48 hours of continuing education units (CEUs) during the current registration period. They must then complete a re-registration form and submit it with a $15.00 re-registration fee to the NREMT before the Soldier’s March 31 expiration date. The $15.00 fee is reimbursed by the OTSG.
b. Medics who fail to submit their re-registration form and registration fee to the NREMT before their 31 March expiration date are allowed an additional 30-day grace period to complete AFZS-DS SUBJECT: Requirements for Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B) Certification and submit their re-registration form with a $50.00 late fee. The OTSG will only reimburse $15.00 to this group of Soldiers. c. Soldiers who fail to renew their EMT-B certification within 90 days may be separated from military service or reclassified into a different MOS by their chain of command. MOS reclassification is based on the needs of the Army. On the other hand, the NREMT allows individuals up to 24 months to complete the following: (1) Complete an EMT-B refresher course and pass a practical and written examination. (2) Complete 48 hours of continuing education units (CEUs). (3) Once the above requirements are accomplished, the individual must submit a registration application form with a $20.00 examination fee to the NREMT. (4) The NREMT will issue a new card with the original NREMT number to those individuals who successfully pass the examination. d. OTSG will only pay once per soldier for the NREMT examination fee. Soldiers who have taken the NREMT examination prior to 2000 or allow their EMT-B certification to expire are required to pay in full for additional examinations. e. Medics who allow their EMT certification to expire after 24 months lose their medical privileges. (1) It is an individual responsibility to complete an EMT-B course. (2) Soldiers must also complete a registration form and submit it with a $20.00 examination fee. The OTSG will not reimburse the $20.00 examination fee. (3) Individuals who successfully pass the NREMT examination will be issued a new EMTB certification with a new registration number. 4. Commanders should be aware that the Mountain Medic Course (see Mountain Medic MOI dated 12 June 2006) meets all re-registration requirements. This course is offered once quarterly at the Fort Drum Medical Training Center. 5. Individuals are granted three attempts to pass the NREMT: one examination and two re-tests. Medics who are unable to pass the NREMT examination are at risk of being separated from military service or reclassified into a different MOS, per the needs of the Army.
