SkillsUSA New York M. Kathie Collins Memo #1 - 2008 – 2009 School Year August 21, 2008
“Good is not enough IF better is possible.”
Enclosed with this memo (16 pages): Web site addresses Theme for 2008 – 2009 New York SkillsUSA state office information Who to Call List Advisor Information Sheet 2008– 2009 State Calendar List of 2008– 2009 State Officer Team Fall Leadership Information o Fall Leadership Registration Form (REVISED FORM) o Fall Leadership Hotel Registration Form o Fall Leadership Rooming List (REVISED FORM) o Fall Leadership VIP Registration Form o Fall Leadership VIP Hotel Registration Form New York State was the host of the National SkillsUSA Directors’ Conference, August 13 – 17, 2008 at Grand Island, New York. Prior to the Conference the 2008 – 9 State Officer team trained at Grand Island and then helped host the directors from across the country. State President, Jared Rogosienski brought greetings to the directors at the Opening Dinner on Thursday evening. Jared also introduced keynote speaker, Kimberly Greene, Executive Director of the National Association of State Directors of Career and Technical Education Consortium. Tim Lawrence graciously asked all the officers present at the dinner (Jared Rogosienski (President), Anthony Schojan (Area I VP), Erin Hartter (Reporter) and Gorden Schubert(Parliamentarian)) to address the national directors and SkillsUSA staff. There was not a dry eye among the New York State staff and advisors in the audience. The student officers did an OUTSTANDING job. Officer Team Manager, John Fernandez, made a presentation to National Directors on how New York trains the state officer team. As usual, John did a wonderful job. State Corporate Member/Director Cheryl Winstel joined me at the Directors’ Conference and will be sharing much of what she learned with the State Education Department. She will also be bringing many ideas back to the New York State Board of Directors.
FALL CONFERENCE NEWS
The. Fall Conference is the first week of November. Advisors wills have to identify participants early as registration and hotel reservations must be in by September 29, 2008. Once again the 2008 will be a dual conference. Training will take place both for students and advisors in separate training tracks. The advisor training will eventually lead to Master Advisor Certification. Formal training will take place in Regional Training Activities and Membership Development. Advisor participation will be documented and when all phases of instruction have been completed, advisors will be eligible to submit a portfolio documenting their chapter program. Areas may also hold training sessions for advisors that will lead to portfolio submission and Master Advisor certification. This year Alan Powell, Executive Director of the National Technical Honor Society, will be doing a presentation regarding the NTHS and the scholarship opportunities for students that are dual enrolled in NTHS and SkillsUSA. Many of our schools have both SkillsUSA and NTHS chapters and the Fall Conference will be a wonderful opportunity to gain insights into both organizations. NEW FOR 2008…….NEW FOR 2008…….NEW FOR 2008 Advisors can attend the conference for one day only and get updated information that they will need to run a chapter. This option is available for ADVISORS ONLY on November 3, 2008. Lunch and t-shirts will NOT be available for advisors using this one day informational option. Lunch may be obtained either in the hotel restaurant or in several area restaurants. The New York State Board of Trustee is asking EVERY chapter in the state to send at least their lead advisor to this important informational conference. The dual track of student and advisor training result in the three teams being for STUDENTS ONLY. Team leaders will be drawn from the New York State officers and their advisors. Students from a chapter will be put into multiple teams to bring as much information back to their chapters as possible. The number of students from a chapter will be limited to six (6) and it is suggested that students attending are juniors or sophomores as chapters are already established by November and the training is geared to develop chapters over 18 more months. In selecting students to attend Fall Conference it is important to make sure that participants are able to work individually and independent of their chapter advisor. Adult participants at the Fall Conference will be involved in training that will help them understand many of the new national initiatives and put POW in their chapter.
We are requesting that each New York State SkillsUSA chapter sends at least one advisor to the Fall Conference advisor training. Each year we
have advisors that tell us they have never received any training in SkillsUSA programs
and do not understand New York membership and Conference registration requirements. Area Trustees are changed with running training in their areas. Many areas are doing outstanding jobs, but the state organization plans on also providing training. MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION
