From the desk of Dr. Michele Martin, Chair – Registration Committee College of Optometrists of Ontario Memorandum To: Members and Stakeholders Date: Wednesday, November 5, 2008 Re: International Optometric Bridging Program Members of the College and stakeholders may be aware that the Registration Committee is reviewing all registration processes. The Committee feels that this is important as part of its mandate to assure that only qualified applicants are registered with the College, and to ensure that the College’s registration processes are consistent with the recent legislative amendments made as a result of the passage of the Fair Access to Regulated Professions Act. The College, and in particular the Registration Committee, is concerned about information that is circulating regarding the International Optometric Bridging Program at the University of Waterloo (IOBP) and the College’s position with respect to that program. The Registration Committee has, for the past four years, accepted applications for registration from persons who have successfully completed the IOBP. Over this period of time, the College recognizes the improvements that have been made to the IOBP. All faculty and staff associated with the development, administration and delivery of this program are to be congratulated on a job well done! The College is committed to bringing about further improvements to its registration processes. Our review is not complete, and accordingly, the Registration Committee has not made any final recommendations to Council. No changes to the registration process have been approved. If, after the Registration Committee has competed its task, recommendations are made and accepted by the Council, members and stakeholders will be notified. Until such time the policies and procedures around registration remain unchanged.
