Many of you work for many hours on programs, budgets, recruiting new members, producing the Memo, paying bills, packing and selling peas and lentils and attending the meetings. All of these activities contribute to a very worthwhile organization of which we should all be proud. The League has a good reputation and currently is the largest league in the State of Idaho. Just think what Moscow would miss without this wonderful organization. As president, I want to thank my board members this past year. I have not been able to do as much as I would like for the League due to my schedule, so I have relied on some very good people to carry on the work. Of course they have done a tremendous job. The programs for the past year have been excellent. Just think of all the information we have gathered about so many different topics including health care, hospice, Latah County Rural development, Judicial Reform, and PCEI. I hope during the coming year we can continue our wonderful programs and have a successful fund raising campaign. Thanks to all of you. Have a wonderful summer! -----Karen Falke President ANNUAL MEETING May 14, 2003 Time: 6 p.m. potluck 7 p.m. meeting Place Amy Ford’s house, 1833 Pine Cone Road. Bring: Potluck. A memorial endowment was established in 1993 in Nancy’s honor to recognize outstanding community volunteers who have demonstrated that same contribution and interest in civic affairs that Nancy showed. It had become apparent over the years that the Nancy Hosack Award rules needed to be updated. A committee made up of Kathleen Warnick, Elizabeth Sullivan, Elizabeth Seale, Amy Ford, Judy Brown, and Mardi Baron met in February to decide on the official name of the award, the rules of the award, who was eligible to receive the award, and when the award would be given. The rewrite of the award rules is below: e recommend that the NANCY HOSACK AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEER SERVICE may be given each year to a volunteer who has given of her/his time and talent to benefit the people of Moscow. An award certificate, $50, and a year’s membership in the League of Women Voters of Moscow would be awarded to the selected nominee. Nominations would be solicited from: • Mayor of the City of Moscow • City Council Members • City Supervisor • Latah Community Volunteer Center • Moscow schools’ principals • County Commissioners • Members of the League of Women Voters of Moscow • People of Moscow, through a press release or letters to the editor to local papers • And others as the committee deems appropriate Requests for nominations would be issued 4-5 weeks prior to the deadline for receipt of nominations. The selection committee would complete its work 2 weeks after the nomination deadline. The award would be presented at an appropriate League of Women Voters of Moscow function, such as after a Fall Forum, the annual Christmas party, or the Annual Meeting The selection committee will convene in September 2003 to begin the nomination process for the Nancy Hosack award for 2003. There’s a great opportunity for Moscow Leaguers to attend a State Convention. It will be in Lewiston, Idaho, June 7-8. We have eight delegate slots to fill and with Lewiston being so close, we want to make sure we fill them all. We have much to be proud of being the biggest league in the state, and we should make our presence known. So, come learn about league, enjoy a special tour of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Sculptures, and meet the other delegates. If you would like to go as a Moscow delegate, your Convention fee will be paid out of our budget. Register by filling out the form below. If you would like to stay for the banquet, you’ll need to include a check for $19. If you want to go on the sculpture tour, include $10 for that fee. Send in your form (and check, if appropriate), by May 7, 2003. Please let Karen Falke, (882-8338 or karen@uidaho.edu) know if you are planning to attend. They are Mary Munson, Andrea Thomas, Jennifer Disotell, Ken Medlin, Bert Cross, and Carol Woodall. Andrea Thomas was born on July 4, 1980 in St. Maries, Idaho, to John and Christie Thomas of Moscow. She graduated from Moscow High School in 1998. Today, she is a junior in the Coordinated Program in Dietetics at the University of Idaho. This is her last semester in Moscow because the senior year of dietetics is spent in Spokane. She has two older sisters who live in Seattle, and who have been her role models her entire life. Currently she is considering pursing a career in medicine. Bert Cross has been a resident of Moscow and Idaho for 41 years. He joined the faculty of the UI in the fall of 1962 as Chairman of the Dept. of Journalism. Before coming to the UI, Bert taught journalism at Kansas State University and Michigan State University. He is a native of Spokane, Wash. and has his B.A. from the Univ. of Washington, an M.S. from the Univ. of Oregon, with doctoral studies in Political Science at Stanford. He was drafted before Pearl Harbor in World War II and spent nearly five years in the Army, three of those in North Africa and Europe. Bert's first wife, Helen, with whom he has two sons, was active in league until her death in 1982. He married Doris (Dode) Bell in1985 and she died in 1992. Bert retired in 1985 and has tried to remain active in volunteer work with various organizations. He looks forward to his participation in League activities. Mary Munson grew up in South-central Illinois, attended school in New Mexico and Florida and is currently a doctoral student at the UI. She has worked as a teacher, counselor, administrative assistant to the president of a computer company, and presently is a realtor. She also serves as a contractor for a personal home she is currently building. Interests include African drumming, belly dancing, design work with desktop publishing, designing houses, and raising Norwegian horses. (Bios were not available for Jennifer.) Board Honors League Veterans The League of Women Voters of Moscow is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. As part of the celebration, 11 women who have been in league for 20 years or more were special guests of the LWV Board at a luncheon on February 25. Karen Falke, Joan Klingler, Marta Robertson, Pauli Owens, Winifred Dixon, Kathleen Warnick, Janet Fiske, Beth Seale, Liz Sullivan, Pat Scott and Loreca Stauber were honored for their contributions to league and to the community of Moscow. The ladies had to “sing for their supper” though. Before lunch, the group gathered to exchange stories and recall events, issues, studies, and personalities from the past. Joan Klingler took notes so we wouldn’t lose those stories. After a lot of good talk, Karen Falke summed it up well by observing that league tends to focus public attention to problems in the community and because we do things well, we tend to be trusted. The ladies then sat down to a lunch of soup, bread, salad, and dessert provided by Joan Klingler and Amy Ford. Nancy Ceccarelli brought Tom Stroschein to pay respects to the group later in the afternoon. It was a grand time. LWV-US Reacts to HAVA LWV-US is anticipating a great need during Election 2004 for competent poll workers. As you know, Congress has enacted new election laws in response to the debacle of the election process in Florida in 2000. The Help America Vote Act (HAVA) will effect every state. LWV-US is in the draft stages of a plan to provide competent, non-partisan volunteers to assist paid election workers at the polls. The plan is to develop public service announcements, conduct volunteer phone banks and distribute tens of thousands of flyers throughout the country in order to sign up 400,000 new poll workers in the next 18 months. League will be working with election officials to help educate voters about the new procedures, as well as their rights, before Election Day. League is also planning to develop a monitoring system for Election Day so that if there is a problem at a polling location, those problems can be identified and corrected. The Secretary of State of Idaho is currently drafting a plan to meet the HAVA requirements to: • Create and maintain a single, uniform, centralized voter registration system. • Provide information to voters on how to correct their ballots and request replacement ballots. • Improve access, privacy and independence for voters with disabilities • Provide a formal procedure for complaints about state and county compliance with the act. League’s traditional role of educating and assisting the electorate is needed to help in this transition. To review the draft of Idaho’s HAVA plan, go to www.idsos.state.id.us or write to Idaho Secretary of State Ben Ysursa, PO Box 83770, Boise, ID 83720 and request a copy of the draft.
