"PageTek the monitoring and control experts Tech Memo KDS"
PageTek the monitoring and control experts Tech Memo KDS Crystal Replacement 06/23/97 ProTek jr jr version with KDS crystal We have determined that some client modems (i.e., the modem the technician uses to login to the ProTek modem) may generate spurious characters when communicating with the ProTek jr. The spurious characters approximate those seen with incorrect terminal emulation, but screens will usually appear correctly formatted and then display garbage at the command prompt. This seems to be a relatively rare occurrence with no discernable relationship to age, price, or mode capability of the client modem. Known to have this difficulty are some models of Everex, Infotel (MidWest Micro) and NEC Versa modems. It has not known to occur with US Robotics, Telepath (Gateway), Racal, Hayes, or Megahertz. The problem has occurred only on those jrs using a KDS crystal for the modem clock and has been corrected by replacing Y4 with the M-TRON part previously used. Y4 can be found immediately behind U40, which is behind the front panel Local VDT LED. PageTek will replace the questionable crystals, which are clearly marked KDS, at no charge. Those who prefer to replace the crystal in the field (a 10-minute job) may call for a replacement M-TRON crystal at no charge. We ask only that you confirm that the KDS crystal is actually installed in your ProTek jr. For further information call Michael Ball at 919-518-1828. tm-KDS crystal replacement-970623
