RE: FINALS WEEK & WINTER BREAK INFORMATION
Finals Week Quiet Hours: Effective on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at 11:00pm,
Centennial Hall will begin 22-hours per day Quiet Hours. During quiet hours, residents are
expected to follow the “2 Doors Down” rule (noise should not be heard from two doors away).
Between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. each day beginning Thursday, December 11th, we will have
two courtesy hours during which normal levels of noise are allowed. During courtesy hours, it is
expected that individuals respect others’ need for quiet study and decrease their noise level if
asked to do so. Twenty-two-hour quiet hours will end at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 18,
2008.
If you are leaving for winter break:
Before you leave for break please, tape the half-sheet checklist that you will be receiving in
your mailbox on Wednesday, December 10th to your door. If you need an extra sheet, you
may stop by the information desk. If you are leaving after 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 18,
2008, you MUST register at the Information Desk and will be charged to your student account the
nightly rate (see below for more information on registering to stay).
When you leave your room for winter break, please do the following:
Leave your heating fan on low. Do not turn off.
Move all items away from/off of heating unit.
Remove all food that could spoil from your refrigerator, and/or defrost it!
Unplug all electronics and appliances (computer, lamps, stereo, alarm clock,
refrigerator, microwave)
Take all fish/plants home or find a caretaker for them.
Put all trash in trash areas/closets.
Lift valuable items (i.e., computers, TVs, etc.) up off the floor.
Close and lock interior and exterior windows and shut the curtains.
Turn off all lights.
Before leaving, read and sign the final check sheet and post it on your door.
Lock your door.
Residence hall staff will be entering all rooms after 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 18th to
complete a final check. Maintenance staff will enter all rooms over winter break to take care of
maintenance concerns and to complete safety checks.
You may return to the residence hall after 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 17th, 2009.
If you are staying in Centennial during any portion of winter break:
If you are planning to stay for any part of winter break, you must register in the Business Office
on or before Tuesday, December 16, 2008. Charges for staying are $20/night. You can sign up
at the front desk beginning Monday, December 8th.
If you are not registered with the Business Office by December 16, 2008, your room will be core-
blocked from December 18, 2008 at 8 p.m. until Saturday, January 17, 2009 at 8:00 a.m. If you
are not registered for the entire break, your room will be core-blocked on the days you are not
registered to stay. At 4:30 p.m. each night, the staff will core-block rooms and remove core-
blocks for those registered to stay. Any resident attempting to stay in his/her room without
registering and paying will be subject to judicial action and will be charged the cost for staying
the entire break period. If you are not registered to stay over the break, but need to gain access to
your room for emergency purposes (i.e., medicine, passport, etc.), you may contact the CA on
duty at 612.490.0797. You will be required to pay the overnight fee ($20.00) to gain access to
your room, even if only for a short time.
If you are planning to leave Centennial permanently at winter break:
Residence Hall and Dining contracts are for the academic year (entire fall and spring semesters).
THERE ARE NO FALL-ONLY CONTRACTS. If you are graduating, withdrawing from the
University, studying abroad, interning, getting married, or establishing a same-gender domestic
partnership, you may be released from your contract PROVIDED that you submit the appropriate
documentation along with a contract release request from, which is available in the business
office. You are legally and financially bound to the entire length of your housing and dining
contract, even if you move your belongings out of your room and turn in your keys, unless you
have an approved contract release request as detailed in this paragraph. Releases for reasons
other than those outlined above are very rarely granted.
Contact the Business Office to fill out a Contract Release Request form. Filling out the
Contract Release Request Form does not guarantee that you will be let out of your housing
contract. It only tells us that you are interested in moving out. If your request is approved, you
will be notified of the check-out process. There will be a limited number of moving carts
available for check-out at the Information Desk during finals week.
Miscellaneous Information:
Parking: All contract parking permits expire at the end of the semester. New permits will not
take effect until the beginning of Spring Semester. If you need to arrange for parking during the
break period, you should contact Parking & Transportation Services directly.
Packages and Mail at the Information Desk: The information desk is not allowed to accept
packages that are not from common carriers such as UPS, FedEx, florists, USPS, etc. Centennial
Hall will continue to accept packages from common carriers during winter break.
Hall Services: The Information Desk will be open, at minimum, from 11am to 5pm each day
during break. The business office will be open during typical business office hours (M-F, 8am-
4:30pm). Items can only be checked out and returned when the desk is open. Mail will be sorted
during the break period and should be in the mailboxes upon your return. Unless you are moving
out permanently, we will not be forwarding mail! There will be minimal housekeeping and
maintenance services during the break.
Dining Services: The last meal served this semester at Centennial will be lunch on Thursday,
December 18th. Grab-and-Go Dinner on December 18 th is available for order online, but must
be picked up by 2pm on Thursday, December 18th. Return any dining items (i.e., silverware,
plates, cups, etc.) you may have in your possession to the dining hall before you leave for break.
It is a violation of Housing and Dining Services policy to remove dining items from the dining
center. If you have a need for these items in your room, please purchase your own utensils
and dinnerware over break.
You are responsible for knowing allof this information, but we
are here to help.
Please ask a CA or the Info Desk if you have questions!
GOOD LUCK WITH FINALS!
HAVE A SAFE AND RELAXING WINTER BREAK!
