					GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS

   Opportunities for funding at the
          Master’s level
    Funding Sources - Scholarships

•    Many scholarships offered for study at the graduate level – do you
     own research, it is financially responsible to search for funding
     opportunities.
•    Securing your own external (non school-specific) funding will
     increase your “marketability” for graduate programs
•    Entrance requirement for many graduate programs is application
     to provincial and/or federal level scholarships (for those with first
     class average (80% -84% or A-)
•    Plan ahead – application deadlines for provincial and
     federal scholarships fall before graduate school
     application deadlines
The Primary Scholarships

  The four key scholarships offered by the provincial and federal
  governments are:

  Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS)
  - Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges & Universities
  Deadline: Monday October 1, 2007



  Canada Graduate Scholarship – Master’s
  (SSHRC CGS-M)
  - Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)
  Deadline: Friday October 19, 2007

Postgraduate Scholarship – Master’s (NSERC PGS-M)
- Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council (NSERC)
Deadline: Tuesday October 9, 2007



Canada Graduate Scholarship – Master’s Award
  (CGSMA)
- Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
Deadline: Friday November 23, 2007
Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS)

• $ 15,000 per year to study full time in a graduate program
  in Ontario
• Open discipline (offered across all disciplines of study,
  except professional programs)
• $ 10,000 from ON government - $5,000 from your institution
• Must re-apply each year
• Available at both the Master’s & Doctoral level of study
• Students who are unable to study full time due to a
  disability are eligible to hold an OGS part time
Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) – Application Information

   • Trent University deadline is: Monday October 1, 2007
   • A complete application is due at the Office of Graduate
     Studies – (Blackburn Hall 115.5)
   • Academic eligibility: average of 80% or greater on the
     last ten full courses (or equivalent) at time of
     application
   • Double majors must choose one major for “current
     studies” section of application – will be ranked only by
     that department
   • Internally your application is reviewed by Graduate Studies
     for eligibility and completedness, then sent to your
     Department for ranking – submitted to the provincial
     competition

METHOD #2 - Apply online using OSAP site   http://osap.gov.on.ca
                             OGS - Application:
                             Supporting Documentation
•   References:
    -“Report 1” from professor most familiar with your work
    - “Report 2” from professor familiar with your work
    - ** Reference forms and letters attached must signed
    *Tip: provide reference with copy of recent essay so they
    can be specific about your accomplishments
Statement of Interest:
    - one-page, single spaced, typewritten (not longer)
    - as specific as you can be about your chosen field (not bound
          to topic/project outlined in your application)
    *Tip: this is one of the most important parts of your
    application be clear, well structured and specify specific
    research question, objectives and methodology
             OGS - Award Information

• Award notifications: around middle of April 2008


• Can start award in either May 2008, September 2008 or
  January 2009


• Award is paid out in three $5,000 installments (start of term)


• Award can only be deferred for medical reasons,
  maternity/paternity leave or compassionate grounds.
   (max. 18 months deferral)
SSHRC - Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s (CGS-M)

• $17,500 per year
• Specific to students studying in Social
  Science/Humanities disciplines
• Can be held only at a recognized Canadian university
• Only one per lifetime (CGS at Master’s level)
• Students with disabilities may hold award on Part
  Time basis
     SSRHC CGS–M - General Information & Eligibility

•   Trent University deadline is:   Friday October 20th, 2006
•   Canadian Citizens or Permanent Resident
•   Must have achieved first class (80%) average in EACH of the last two
    years of full-time study (80% minimum in your second year and 80%
    in your third year of undergraduate)
Note: this differs from OGS – not a combined average of last
  two years
•   Trent has a small quota of applications that can be forwarded to
    National Competition
•   Request official transcripts as soon as possible from R/O
•   Make arrangements for your references (“ Letter of Appraisal”) as soon as
    possible
                              SSRHC CGS-M - Application



•   http://www.sshrc.ca/web/apply/students_e.asp
         -   select “web application”
         -   Register or logon to the SSHRC online system
    (Application is very similar to OGS – including the supporting
    documentation ie. references, one official transcript)




•   Submit BLANK Departmental Appraisal, Office of Graduate
    Studies will process this form for all applicants.
•   Once application is complete and verified – PRINT and submit
    complete application (transcripts and references) to Graduate
    Studies Office, Blackburn Hall Suite 115.5
                             SSRHC CGS-M
                             Award Notification and Tenure


• Applications ranked by department, ranked by the Trent
  SSHRC scholarship committee – quota decisions made
• Quota of applications forwarded to the National
  Competition
• Notification letters sent to all applicants re: status
• Award winners will be announced in Spring 2008
• Awards can be taken up in September 2008 or January
  2009
• Awards paid out in three installments of $5,833/each at the
  beginning of each term
 NSERC – Postgraduate Scholarships (PGS-M and
 Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s (CGS-M)



• Specific to students studying in Natural
  Science/Engineering disciplines
• $17,300 per year for PGS-M
• $17,500 per year for CGS-M
• All applications are for PGS-M – top ranked applications
  (by national committee) are awarded CGS-M
• Can be held only at a recognized Canadian university
• Students with disabilities/ family responsibilities may hold
  award on Part Time basis

•   Start your scholarship application process now
•   Take the time to write a clear, well organized “Statement of
    Interest” / “Outline of Proposed Research” / “Plan of
    Study”
•   Have a faculty member review “Plan of Study”
•   Good references are very important to all applications
•   Make your applications look as professional as possible
•   Follow the published application instructions precisely
•   Keep a dossier of each scholarship application for future years
•   Self-administered application process
•   Do your own scholarship research – look for offerings through
    various councils, not-for-profit organizations, foundations, other
    government departments (i.e.. CIDA), associations
